Tutoring review by Caroline in Strasburg, VA
Today the student and I covered inequalities, area and circumference of circles, and solving problems with variables. She seemed pretty comfortable and willing to learn during the session, and had a positive attitude toward the materials we reviewed. She was able to let me know when she didn't feel comfortable or she didn't understand something. I left a website for her to do more practice problems. She has difficulty with problem solving with variables. I gave her a few tips that had helped me as a student. But, towards the end of the session she started to show understanding of the material.

Tutoring review by Scott in Strasburg, VA
We worked through her homework review regarding finding the coordinates on a segment given either both endpoints or a midpoint and an endpoint. We got into more difficult problems dealing with coordinates containing fractions with differing denominators during the end. She grasped the pattern easily.

Tutoring review by Luke in Strasburg, VA
We finished the packet today, finishing with trigonometry and covering sinusoidal regression (which is basically an understanding of how to use scatter plots on a graphing calculator). The student did very well on this part, she understood the concepts well and spotted a couple of very intelligent shortcuts to the solutions. She has a good head for mathematics, but needs to watch out for details like rounding, signs (positive or negative), and putting the parenthesis in the right places on the calculator. She should be careful to double check such details. I was very pleased to work with the student and wish her the best for her future.

Tutoring review by Meagan in Strasburg, VA
We started by talking broadly about a sample essay the student had sent me, including why he chose the topic, what about it was meaningful to him, and other questions to help find an overall theme for the essay that would also work for college essays. Throughout the session, I asked him guiding questions about the topic of the essay and the topics of specific paragraphs, taking notes on what he said, and we turned the notes into either sentences or outlines for a paragraph. One approach that worked was for me to type out sentences he had already said, and he then edited those sentences. This approach helped deal with the difficulty of starting off an essay or section of an essay, while maintaining his voice. For the next session, I recommended he take the phrases we used to outline paragraphs and turn them into complete sentences and paragraphs; even if he doesn't like the sentences, in the next session, we'll work on editing them and also on revising for grammar.

Tutoring review by Steven in Strasburg, VA
The student was having some difficulty with the initial material in her physics class. This material included vectors and scalars, 1D kinematics, free fall, projectile motion, and Newton's laws. We defined some terms for the vectors displacement (contrasted with the scalar distance) and talked about steps to take to help solve kinematics problems. We also learned how to break vectors down into components, and then how to draw force and free body diagrams. We concluded with a discussion of friction.

Tutoring review by Ramon in Strasburg, VA
The student and I had a crash course on derivatives, product rule, quotient rule, and the chain rule. We also covered explicit and implicit differentiation of polynomials and exponentials. He struggles most with falling behind and not having an intuitive understanding of the material. We will continue to work on difficult topics and build up his intuition of calculus.
