Tutoring review by Asya in Treasure Island, FL
The student is covering Riemann Sums in her calculus class. To begin our introduction to them, we discussed when using them is appropriate in real world applications, how to choose sub intervals, and when to sacrifice computation time for accuracy. We covered the four different estimation approaches, right hand, left hand, midpoint, and trapezoidal. I gave the student problems with both defined functions and just graphs and had her estimate the area under the curve and then compare it to their perfect area using anti-derivatives.

Tutoring review by Dae in Treasure Island, FL
The student's class is working on probability, permutations and combinations. He has no difficulty solving permutations and combinations but was having some difficulty with working through word problems, particularly for permutations. We worked through some practice word problems in the book, which seemed to really help him work through the process of converting a word problem into an equation. Writing out permutation and probability equations proved challenging, but seemed to improve with his ability to determine if a word problem was referring to a permutation or combination, or whether the probability value was dependent, independent or mutually exclusive. He seems to be understanding the material better and was going to ask his instructor for any practice word problems for further studying.
