The LSAT is used by many law schools as a part of their admissions process. It is accepted by every ABA accredited law school and is designed to measure skills that are considered necessary for success in their programs. If you have an interest in attending law school at a university such as Boston College Law School, the Boston University School of Law, or Harvard Law School, you may need to do well on the LSAT to have a chance at getting accepted.
The LSAT is taken on tablets that are available at the testing center. Answering a question requires you to choose an answer by tapping on the screen. Using the tablets offers a couple of benefits, including a timer that gives you a warning when you're within five minutes of the end of the exam and also the ability to flag and highlight answers you might want to review if you have extra time.
In terms of scoring, the LSAT is graded between 120 and 180 points. Your score on the LSAT is based on how many questions you answer correctly. Every question on the exam is weighted the same so the test is more concerned with how many questions you get right rather than looking at any specific question you answer correctly. Additionally, there is no penalty for answering a question incorrectly, so there's no risk in guessing if you're not sure about the correct answer.
What can a Boston LSAT class help me review?
The LSAT has four sections, which include Reading Comprehension, Logical Reasoning, Analytical Reasoning, and Writing. Each section is designed to measure different skills that are viewed as vital when it comes to predicting how successful you might be in law school.
Reading Comprehension consists of one section and you will have 35 minutes to complete it. This portion of the test is designed to measure your ability to read through complex passages and demonstrate that you comprehend them. The passages are designed to resemble the type of reading you'll come across in law school. The Reading Comprehension section contains a variety of different questions. Some of the questions test your ability to identify the main purpose of a passage, identify information that is explicitly stated, and also identify information that can be inferred. Other questions look at how well you can apply information to a different context, your ability to understand analogies, and your ability to identify an author's attitudes based on their tone.
Logical Reasoning contains two sections and you'll have 70 minutes to complete them. You will be required to read through arguments and exhibit your ability to analyze and evaluate them. The material on this section comes from newspapers, magazines, scholarly publications, and advertisements. The Logical Reasoning section is designed look at how well you can draw conclusions, whether you are able to reason by using analogies, and if you can recognize misunderstandings in arguments. It also examines your ability to identify flaws in arguments, whether you can identify and apply principles, and if you are able to identify explanations.
Analytical Reasoning has one section and you'll have 35 minutes to complete it. This part examines your ability to comprehend the structure of relationships and draw conclusions based on that structure. The Analytical Reasoning section tests your reasoning with conditional statements, your ability to recognize statements that are logically equivalent, and your ability to infer what could be true based on rules and facts.
The Writing section is not completed at the same time as the other sections. You can complete the Writing section online in a secure testing platform and you are given a year from the date you complete the other sections to submit your writing sample. The Writing section isn't graded, but it will be sent to any law school you decide to apply to. This section asks you to look at a problem with two possible courses of actions or possible positions. You will be asked to pick one of the options and defend it. Neither position is considered the correct or incorrect choice, but you will be expected to defend yourself by using reasoning and logic. This section is designed to test your ability to argue your decisions by using organization, clarity, and writing mechanics.
How can a Boston LSAT course help me prepare?
There a variety of ways in which a Boston LSAT class can help you prepare for the exam. Varsity Tutors' LSAT courses are based on resembling a classroom experience. You will have an instructor who guides you through your review sessions, but you'll also be working with other students. Having an instructor can be important because they can use their knowledge to help you review material that may be on the exam. This can include going over vocabulary, reading through passages, and taking practice tests, among other activities. Working with an instructor can also prove valuable in terms of getting a better idea as to the type of material you may encounter when you take the exam.
Working with other students can also be beneficial because it offers the opportunity to hold discussions and allows you to collaborate with your peers. This can be especially helpful when it comes to reasoning and logic because other students may have insight into different ways of thinking.
