I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Alexander

Certified Tutor

I am currently a doctoral student at the University of Southern California, and I completed earlier degrees at the Juilliard School in New York and at La Sierra University in Riverside, CA. At La Sierra as an undergrad, I received dual degrees with honors in violin and mathematics, both of which have led me to teaching opportunities. In tutoring either field, I enjoy the constant adaptation of finding an approach suited to each student that will help them achieve their goals. Both mathematics and music are often considered to be innate talents, but being able to assist students of any background in gaining proficiency is an exciting opportunity for me and a fulfilling one when it happens. Beyond mathematics, I also welcome tutoring opportunities in Chemistry and especially Physics, with it's mathematical foundation.
Another field in which I feel passionately about helping others is in English writing. Prior to working for Varsity Tutors, I would often help my friends with editing personal statements. I have also been fortunate to enjoy a key role in a start-up orchestra in New York City as a grant writer. Writing is an indispensable life skill that is too often overlooked, and I feel that my background allows me to be of help in a variety of tutoring subjects involving writing, from test prep to grammar and mechanics.
I was fortunate to do well enough on the PSAT to earn a full scholarship for my undergraduate studies, and I recognize the importance of the PSAT, SAT, and AP tests for other students in achieving their educational hopes and dreams with a minimum financial burden. I am happy to work with students to prepare them for the standardized tests in the areas within my expertise.
When I am not occupied with school, one of my hobbies is cycling and bicycle mechanics. I've rebuilt a number of vintage steel bicycles, and would like to build a wheel soon. I also like to stay active on the side with video and audio editing projects.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I try to be results-oriented and question-based, while staying active in providing appropriate direction. I recognize the importance of meeting students where they are.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I prefer to address material in terms that students already are thinking in. It's ideal for a student to feel that he came up with a solution himself.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By providing honest feedback, so that students can see an accurate picture of their progress and be motivated to improve from session to session.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Stop and ask them to tell me as much as they can about the skill or concept.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Encourage them to read more outside of school, and provide suggestions for reading.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Asking them enough questions that they are forced to make and substantiate frequent assertions.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Ask about their strengths and weaknesses, and suggest materials to read or study for weaknesses before starting to work.
