I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I am an MD/MPH student. I have lived in Baltimore for three years, and I am originally from Australia. I moved to the US to play college tennis and then I stayed in the US for medical school. I am currently doing a Master's degree in public health and my schedule is very flexible.

I am able to offer tutoring in a variety of subjects, especially in the areas of mathematics and science. I have tutored students before for SAT prep and have experience with teaching anatomy. I also taught tennis for five years which is where I gained most of my skills in teaching.

I really enjoy teaching and I find it extremely rewarding. I love working with students to help them grasp new concepts. Most crucially though, I like to inspire students to want to learn and to help students to develop strong life-long learning habits.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My primary goal as a teacher is to inspire and motivate students to learn. Once a student is engaged and motivated, anything is possible.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Set goals for the session and ask students what they would like to focus on.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By teaching them the skills that are required to learn on there own. This might include teaching organizational skills, teaching them how to be resourceful and to find information for themselves, and teaching them how to go about solving problems when they don't know the answer.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By making the sessions fun and enjoyable, and also by ensuring that they are continuing to learn.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would go back to the basics to make sure that they are not having problems with any basic concepts that are preventing them from learning the new skill or concept.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would get the student to deconstruct each sentence/paragraph to make sure that they understand what the author is trying to say.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I start by asking them a range of questions with increasing difficulty to assess where their level is.
