Tiani
Certified Tutor
I graduated Magna Cum Laude with my Bachelors of Science in Food and Nutrition
Science from Florida State University. I was a certified tutor at the Academic Center
for Excellence for a multitude of college level subjects including: chemistry, organic
chemistry, biochemistry, biology, genetics, anatomy and physiology, nutrition,
Spanish, statistics, and proof-reading essays. I have tutored one-on-one and in
groups. I especially love to tutor the chemistry classes aforementioned because of
the useful study skills I developed from them. In high school, I won a few awards as
a member of the speech/debate team. I have many tips and tricks to help students
with difficulty in public speaking. Education is absolutely crucial for becoming
successful and feeling accomplished both physically and mentally. There should be
no barriers to impede one's educational pursuit. My tutoring style is adaptable and
relies on how the student learns. I ask a few questions to engage the student's
critical thinking skills so that they can solve the problems independently. I have
performed well on the new MCAT and have been accepted to Florida State
University College of Medicine and University of Cincinnati Medical School. I will
begin medical school Fall of 2016. This is my first time with standardized test-prep,
so I will help students with successful studying strategies, how to find free
resources, and plenty of exam practice with high yield topics.

What is your teaching philosophy?
The tutor must adapt to the student's learning style and engage their critical thinking skills. These skills will help the student lead a successful, independent life.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would first ask what subjects they most need help in and assess where they are in those courses versus where they are expected to be. I would ask them about their learning style and what they have done in past, similar situations that may or may not have helped them. Then, I will help the student make a schedule to catch up and hone their learning skills.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I like to ask a lot of questions to help guide the student's thinking path. They should be able to show me their process of solving a problem or eliminating some answers. I will help them manipulate and convert variables or structures to an understandable and applicable form that they can use in many ways for their classes.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would have the student take a 10 minute break after every hour of studying to keep their brain focused. I would help them apply what they have learned so far to their everyday life so they can see the usefulness of that subject.
