Coertunay

Certified Tutor

I started as a swim coach and swim lesson teacher seven years ago and since then have tutored children and adults from the ages of 9 years old to 20 years old. I have experience tutoring in math, algebra, geometry, biology, physiology, chemistry, physics, MCAT review and study techniques, as well as reading and writing.

I am a graduate of the University of Washington, Seattle with a Bachelors degree in General Biology, and I absolutely love tutoring. I went through the entire pre-med process, but decided to pursue a career in ethnopharmacology instead. During my free time, you will find me either writing songs on my guitar, swimming, surfing, cooking, or spending time with my friends and family.

My approach to teaching is to first understand how the student learns so that I can help them develop effective study and homework strategies. Every person learns a little differently, and I believe that finding the method that works best for each individual is not only the best way to learn, but also the most fun way. I also believe in building my students' confidence in themselves and their own abilities and knowledge.

One of the key ingredients to doing well on homework assignments and exams is to be confident in oneself. Confidence leads to perseverance and tenacity, but it is often the first quality that is lost when a student is having trouble in school. I believe that by helping my students realize just how capable they truly are, I can help them rebuild their confidence when they study, do homework, or take their exams. I look forward to learning with you!

What is your teaching philosophy?

I always strive to make sure that my students are engaged and having fun while learning. This way, the information will stick in their brains better. I also strive to help my students see the depth of their abilities and boost their own self-confidence. Having confidence in oneself is just as important as having knowledge when it comes to taking exams and learning new skills.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I like to learn exactly how they prefer to work, and exactly how they like to learn. For example, if my student is a visual learner, we may look at pictures to learn a concept. If they are a kinesthetic learner, we may role play a concept or draw it out. I also love learning about what their other interests apart from academics are, as it helps me build a connection with my student, as well as a deeper understanding of who my student is.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I always strive to teach my students skills that will help them study. Depending on their learning type, I can introduce new ways to take notes, write flashcards, organize their materials, or study in a way that fits their learning type and interests. Finding what works for that student will allow me to help my students study on their own through college and beyond.
