What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is simple. Confidence is key, so walking a student through problems is important until they are be able to do it on their own. I am very laid back, and enjoy seeing students succeed!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know the student and understand what type of learner they are. Also, develop an understanding for their strengths and weaknesses to make them as well rounded as possible.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Teach them study strategies and how to approach certain tests. Also teach them how to use a textbook correctly, only using the parts they NEED.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Give them confidence and make tutoring sessions fun--something to look forward too rather than dread.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will take a little extra time on the concept and approach it from multiple directions until it clicks with the student.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would tell them to relax, and try to find meaning as they read rather than just going through the motions.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

One good strategy is to start with simpler problems so the student does not feel overwhelmed, and then move into the more complicated concepts.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would tell them why that subject is important. Also, I would find a way to relate it to their interests/hobbies so they are interested in it. Also, showing real-world applications is key.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Once they are ready I would let them work some practice problems on their own. I would ask them to briefly teach me what they learned to make sure they feel like an expert.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Start off easy and work to more complicated problems. Never set up a student for failure.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I ask them what they feel confident with and what they think they need more work on. After working certain problems, I will be able to tell their strengths and weaknesses.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Just have a feel for that student. Some like to listen; some like to write. I can tell quite easily how a student prefers to learn.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

The whiteboard mostly; also materials from my time in school that I have saved as useful tools.
