Certified Tutor

I am, what my family calls, a professional student. I absolutely love to learn and take as many classes as possible. I started out as a Chemistry major at UNCW but decided to pause my college education to attend paramedic school and work as a paramedic. Then after becoming a mother, I returned to college through Trident Technical college in SC to obtain my Associates in Science. I followed that by completing a Bachelors of Science in Psychology degree at Old Dominion University. I attended a DO medical school and was successful in completing the coursework and Board exams but due to personal reasons I withdrew medical school as a fourth year student. I'm now a single mom of 3 boys and completing a Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.
When I first attended college at UNCW, I would tutor middle school aged kids in a variety of subjects. I really enjoyed teaching and helping others with their education and really looking forward to tutoring again. I will be tutoring all elementary & middle school subjects, Algebra 1&2, MCAT verbal reasoning and after refreshing my own knowledge, I will be tutoring Chemistry, Biology, Organic Chemistry and Physics.
As a long time student and mother of a son that struggles to learn the "traditional" way, I firmly believe that everyone learns a different way. So as a tutor, I want to help you find the way you learn best and help to present the material that way for you. Everyone has the ability to become knowledgable and smart in all areas, if the information is presented in a way that they can understand. I hope to help you do just that!
As a mom of 3 young boys and a full time college student, I don't have many hobbies. I enjoy spending time with my loved ones and reading books.
I have been a student my entire life and I have a true passion for education and helping others. I would love to work with you and help you with whatever area you need an extra boost in. Learning can be fun and I look forward to having a blast with you!

What is your teaching philosophy?

As a long time student and mother of a son that struggles to learn the "traditional" way, I firmly believe that everyone learns a different way. So as a tutor, I want to help you find the way you learn best and help to present the material that way for you. Everyone has the ability to become knowledgeable and smart in all areas, if the information is presented in a way that they can understand. I hope to help you do just that!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a first session with a student, I want to assess what their strengths and weaknesses are and how they learn the best! That way I can establish where to start and how to present the material in the best way for them!

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By working with the student and figuring out how they learn and connect with the material, I can guide them through the steps to understanding the problem. While practicing the material and helping them work through it on their own with some guidance from myself, they can learn how to solve it for themselves.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I know that getting encouragement and great results motivates me to keep going. So I plan on encouraging my students to work hard and as they learn the material and start getting better at it, it will motivate them to keep going!

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try to learn why they are having difficulty with a skill or concept, and then show them a different way to approach it. There are many ways to learn and sometimes all it takes to understand it better is to come at from a different angle.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

The strategies that I find most successful when working with a new student is getting to know them and their own personal learning style. Schools tend to present material the same way for all the students but by tutoring a kid one on one, I can learn what works for them personally and help them to do their best!

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

It's easy to get discouraged when you are struggling, as I have experienced myself in my academic career. I plan to keep students excited and engaged by encouraging them to continue trying and helping them to truly understand the material and how to think critically about the problems so they can solve them on their own. The more they succeed, the more excited they will get about the subject.
