I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Kaleel

Certified Tutor

I've completed a Master of Public Health in Biostatistics (SUNY Downstate), a Bachelor of Arts in Biology (Columbia University), and currently work as a forensic biologist at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in New York City. I am passionate about tutoring the ACT, high school math, biology, and English. My greatest ACT tutoring success story was increasing a student's overall score from a 23 to a 28 in a matter of 8 weeks during the summer of 2015. Ideally, I would like to tutor students preparing for the ACT and advise them as they prepare to apply to college.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Start with an area they comfortable, confident, and (ideally) excited about. I believe it's best to build from a student's strong points and interests in order to expand their skills and comfort level with other areas.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I use diagnostic tests. If this is for the ACT, then simply having them take a practice test or looking at one of their recent ones. The same goes for the MCAT. When it comes to class subjects, I'll usually give them an age/class appropriate test to see where they are at. A few other key areas are confidence in their ability to learn the material and perform well on tests, interest in the subject matter, and willingness to commit to a study regimen. I usually assess these through a simple survey followed by talking with them.
