The SSAT is a fairly comprehensive exam that assesses students in five different sections. The five sections are Reading, Verbal, Quantitative, Experimental, and Writing. The Experimental section takes only 15 minutes and is not scored. The Writing sample does not receive a score either but is sent to prospective independent or private schools with your SSAT score.

There are three different levels of SSAT exam. The level your student will take depends on their upcoming grade. Let's take a closer look at the skills needed at each level in order to succeed on the SSAT.

The Elementary Level exam is for third-grade students and fourth-grade students who are applying to an independent school for the upcoming school year. Students at this level will answer a total of 89 questions with a time limit of one hour and 50 minutes. The 30-minute Quantitative section will assess your student on basic math such as addition, subtraction, division, or multiplication. The Verbal section will last for 30 minutes and provide your student with an opportunity to demonstrate his or her knowledge of synonyms and different types of analogies. The Reading section requires your student to locate the main idea of a passage and has a time limit of 30 minutes. The Writing sample is only 15 Minutes long and asks your student to write a simple story based on a picture prompt.

The Middle Level SSAT is for fifth- through seventh-grade students who are hoping to apply to an independent middle school for the upcoming year. This section has a total of 167 questions and a time limit of just under three hours. The Writing sample at this level takes 25 minutes and requires your student to choose between two creative prompts and select one as the basis of a story. This level has two 30-minute Quantitative sections that provide your student with the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge of operations using variables and the ability to work with mean, median, mode, and range. The Reading section lasts for 40 minutes and requires your student to be able to understand and critique written opinions and arguments. The Verbal section is a half-hour assessment on relating ideas and words to each other in a logical manner as well as prefixes, suffixes, and word roots.

The Upper Level SSAT is for eighth- through eleventh-grade students hoping to gain admission to an independent high school for the following year. This level also consists of a two hour and 50-minute assessment with 167 questions. At this level, there are two Quantitative sections that require students to be able to solve algebraic problems and demonstrate graphing skills within an hour. The 40-minute Reading section will assess your student's ability to determine the purpose, attitude, and tone of a given passage. The Verbal section of this level of the SSAT is half an hour long with questions on synonyms, analogies, prefixes, suffixes, antonyms, and word roots. The Writing section will provide your student with two prompts, which will assess your student's ability to use proper persuasive writing techniques.
