Geology Tutoring FAQ

Geology is the study of the Earth's composition, the current position of its components, and the way these components shift over time. The field is an important branch of natural science that helps us develop a greater understanding of the environment and the history of Earth's species. Furthermore, it also helps us understand how our landmasses formed and how plants and animals have changed over time.

Geology has a wide variety of applications, not only in scientific fields such as biology and paleontology, but also in a variety of industries outside of academia. For example, by having a working knowledge of geology, you might know not to buy property on a flood plain if you plan to build a house. The aims of geology may seem simple and straightforward, but its principles can become complex and convoluted very quickly. Whether you are having a hard time with your first geology unit in science class, or are pursuing a degree in geology or a related subject at a university, private geology tutoring can help guide you through the concepts and principles that you need to be successful in this area of study.

We discussed the students background in science, and the approach that his instructor was taking, as well as the materials he was being given. For the first lecture and textbook chapters I found that the student lecture notes were well taken, and that he had a fair understanding of what was being delivered to the class. I said that preparation for the various tests was important and that I would be e-mailing him some possible questions for him to research. At the end of the session he started to ask questions.

The student is preparing for a final in her Geology 104 course. We started the session by going over a few questions from her last exam that she had trouble with. We then moved on to cover some topics from the beginning of the class (basic stratigraphy, sedimentary rock types, etc.). I spent a little bit of time at the end of the session giving her suggestions on how she should study in the mean time. Next week we will have another session and go over the study sheet for the final together and go over any areas she is having trouble.

Today, we reviewed geometry by going through the student's book, and picking out random problems related to quadrilaterals. He did all of them well with a few hiccups along the way. Afterwards, we reviewed a little bit of history, specifically the War of 1812. Then I talked about general test-taking strategies that should help for any test. Overall, there wasn't much we needed to talk about; he really understood his material well.
