What Subjects Does Los Angeles ACT Prep Cover?

The ACT is a comprehensive standardized test that consists of four sections along with an optional Writing section. The four required sections of the ACT are Math, Reading, English, and Science. The Math section is made up of 60 multiple-choice questions and you are given 60 minutes to answer them all. You are allowed to use certain calculators. It is important to know certain concepts in order to score your best. You will need to know number systems, functions, geometric shape, and solid measurement calculations. This section will also test your abilities in solving, graphing, and modeling different expressions. You should also have a good understanding of probabilities, distributions, as well as data collection application and analysis.

In the Reading Section, you will be given passages to read and 40 multiple-choice questions based on those passages. You only have 35 minutes to read and answer all the questions, so you will need to work quickly and efficiently. This section measures reading comprehension circumstances typically experienced in the first year of college. In this section, you will be identifying central themes, summarizing ideas, determining word and phrase meanings, and identifying relationships between text. This section requires you to have a good command of the English language as well as excellent reading skills.

The English section also requires you guessed it, a good command of the English language. Again, you will be given passages and will need to answer 75 multiple-choice questions pertaining to those passages. You will have 45 minutes to complete this section. Your abilities to understand English, language skills, as well as your ability to produce writing will be assessed. Concepts you will need to know in this section are topic development, organization, sentence structure, punctuation, and grammar. You will also need to understand the tone and style of language.

The Science section tests subjects such as biology, chemistry, earth and space sciences, and physics. It consists of 40 multiple-choice questions with which you will be given 35 minutes to answer. This section measures your abilities to interpret, analyze, evaluate, reason, and problem-solve. You will need to be able to manipulate and analyze scientific data that is presented to you in different formats. It is also important that you have a good understanding of the scientific method as well as other tools and procedures of scientific experimentation and investigation. There is sometimes a short experimental section after this section, but it is not scored, and it will be clearly marked.

Lastly, the optional Writing section contains one essay question. You are given 40 minutes to write your essay. You will be presented an issue and 3 different perspectives on that issue. It is your job to write a response to that issue stating your own perspective and then analyze connections between your perspective and a minimum of one of the 3 perspectives provided. Concepts you need to know to receive your best score in this section are drafting and organization skills, as well as the ability to analyze and compare ideas. This section is handwritten only unless you have a diagnosed disability that prevents you from handwriting.

Other information you that can be helpful to know is that there are several testing dates per year in the U.S. Every test begins at 8:00 AM, meaning you will be dismissed around 12:35 PM for the ACT, and around 1:35 PM if you opt to take the ACT Plus Writing. You are only allowed to use a #2 pencil to answer questions, and it is important that you answer all of the questions, guessing is not penalized.
