Varsity Tutors can help students with their college entrance exam preparations by helping them find a San Francisco ACT preparation option that is right for them. Even though college can seem like a long way off, it's really never too early to begin getting ready. Most often it is during their junior year that many high schoolers are expected to take a college admissions test. If you're a student at Henry M. Gunn High School or Lowell High School, that test could be the ACT. Taking this test is typically the first step in the application process, as the scores of the ACT can be a determining factor in whether or not you get into a school to which you've applied. As such, you will want to put your best foot forward.
The ACT is made up of five individual sections that are meant to measure a student's readiness for the academic rigors they will face in college. Whether you have only just begun your preparations or been studying religiously for quite some time, your target should be to walk into the test feeling calm and well prepared. If you are looking to sharpen your skills and further expand your knowledge of the content in the time leading up to the exam, Varsity Tutors can help. We can assist you in finding the study help that you need. For some, that might be the focused attention of a San Francisco ACT tutor. Others may benefit more from a San Francisco ACT prep course. Regardless of which type of study assistance you need, we can help to connect you to the option that works best for you.
What Material Does San Francisco ACT Prep Cover?
The four sections of the ACT include English, Math, Reading, and Science. There is also a Writing portion that is not mandatory. Should you choose to skip the Writing portion, your test will clock in at around three hours in total. If you do plan on taking the ACT Plus Writing, count on adding 40 minutes to your total exam time. We can further break down each section in order to give you a better sense of what material and topics you are likely to experience on the exam.
The English portion tests your ability to edit and revise a provided text. Some questions that you will be asked to answer might focus on the passage as a whole, with others being more concerned with smaller sections that, such as single sentences or a couple of words. You will need to judge the writing based on its style, tone, and grammar and usage. You have a total of 45 minutes to answer 75 questions. Because of the high amount of questions, you will definitely want to work efficiently when taking the test.
The Math section tests you on many of the skills that high schoolers are meant to have mastered. This could include various materials taken from algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. You will be given a maximum time of 60 minutes to complete an equal number of questions. While it might sound reasonable to answer one question per minute, you should be mindful that it requires a good deal of focus to work at such a pace while maintaining accuracy.
The Reading portion tests your comprehension abilities as opposed to the more mechanics-focused questions present in the English portion. You will be measured on your reasoning skills, your ability to identify key themes, and your skills in making connections based on multiple sources. You have a total time of 35 minutes in which to answer 40 questions.
The Science section has a total of 40 multiple choice questions with a time limit of 35 minutes. This portion of the test is meant to measure your abilities in scientific analysis, reasoning, and problem-solving. The Science portion is likely to pull from many different scientific branches, including chemistry, physics, Earth sciences, and biology.
The Writing portion gives you a total of 40 minutes to write an essay on a single topic. This section is optional, but if you do plan on taking it, expect to create a clearly written essay that is developed logically and is filled with well-supported ideas throughout. You are also expected to show a strong command of written English.
What Are the Benefits of the Different Types of San Francisco ACT prep?
Varsity Tutors can provide information on two very effective methods of ACT study: prep courses and private tutoring. Each option offers its own unique benefits. You may even decide that a combination of both options is best for you. Let's look at the ways that a San Francisco ACT tutor or a prep class could help you in your learning.
An online San Francisco ACT prep course could be very beneficial to you, especially if you appreciate a more traditional classroom setting. Your highly knowledgeable instructor can offer unique insights and tips for how to approach challenging subjects. Furthermore, you have the ability to interact not only with your instructor but also your fellow students, asking them questions or getting valuable feedback. You even have the option to set up a one on one meeting with your instructor if you have lingering questions. New classes begin every week, and you can pick from classes that run for two weeks or four weeks.
For those seeking a more customized learning experience, working with a tutor could be a great option for you. Your tutor can get to know your individual learning style, giving them the chance to create specialized content that highlights the areas that are most important to you. Furthermore, they also offer a flexible schedule with sessions that can fit into your busy life.

Everyone is different and to be a successful tutor, you cannot apply the same teaching methods to every student. I like to focus on exam skills. I also like to build special study methods to help students improve study efficiency. Finally, I like to focus on the basics of each subject and make sure the student understands before moving on to more complicated concepts.... (First step) Understand the material/ basic concept of the subject instead of memorizing. (Second step) Try to apply it to practical questions. (Last Step) Refine the learned material; try to tickle questions in different angles and develop critical thinking.
