What's tested on the MCAT?
The Medical College Admission Test, or MCAT, is a standardized exam that is taken by individuals who are getting ready to apply to medical school. The test was designed to help medical schools assess which of their applicants are most suited for success in the demanding medical school environment. To accomplish this purpose, the exam is split into four different sections. Each of these sections focuses on a different set of skills that you'll need to be successful in medical school and when practicing as a physician.
The first section of the exam is called Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems. The section has a total of 59 questions and a time limit of 95 minutes. The section focuses on some of the most important topics in subjects like chemistry and biology. You'll be asked questions about the chemical and physical principles that drive the mechanisms operating in the human body as well as questions about the functions of the body's tissues and organs, among other things.
Next, the MCAT moves into a non-scientific subject area with its Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills section. Here, you'll be tasked with reading a series of written passages on topics in social studies and the humanities. Then, you'll need to answer five to seven questions based on the material that you've read in each of these passages. This part of the MCAT is concerned with your verbal reasoning, reading comprehension, and analytical skills.
Third, the MCAT moves on to its Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems section. There are a total of 59 questions on this section and it has a time limit of 95 minutes. Here, you'll answer questions about selected topics in organic chemistry, general chemistry, biochemistry, and biology. This section focuses on processes that are unique to living organisms and will also assess your scientific reasoning skills in a variety of ways.
Finally, the MCAT concludes with its section on Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior. The purpose of this section is to assess the skills that are required to serve a diverse group of patients as a practicing physician. To that end, you'll answer questions in this section about mental health issues, behavioral impact on overall health, and social issues that impact the field of medicine, among other things. You'll want to have a solid understanding of core topics in sociology, psychology, and biology to perform well on this part of the MCAT.

...physiology. Given the amount of schooling I have gone through myself, I have taken a wide range of subjects and more standardized tests than I would like to admit. I have taught students of almost every age in various fields such as elementary science, Hebrew, chemistry, MCAT prep, and many more.. My ultimate plan is to go to medical school, but in the meantime I try to teach as much as possible!... I know firsthand what it is like to be bogged down by material from way too many classes at once. And it can become even more difficult to focus when you throw a standardized test like the SAT or the MCAT into the mix. Because I have been through it, I bring to my students the unique perspective of a recently stressed out student myself, who can communicate with them on a personal level. I work to understand what is the most difficult, the most motivating, and the most rewarding for my students.
