NBDE Tutoring FAQ
The National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) is required to secure a license and practice dentistry across the United States. If you are finding it difficult to prepare for, Varsity Tutors can help you find an experienced NBDE tutor who can help you.
The exam is split into two parts. Part one consists of 400 questions administered over seven hours about the science curriculum studied in dental school. Roughly one fifth of the questions are in individual testlets and stress clinical applications with an interdisciplinary focus, while the rest are more academic in nature. Topics include anatomic sciences, biochemistry-physiology, microbiology-pathology, and dental anatomy and occlusion. It is generally taken after your first or second year of dental school.
Part two emphasizes clinical dentistry and is administered over two days. Day 1 consists of 400 questions over a seven-hour format, mirroring the format of Part 1. Day 2 consists of 100 case-based questions over three-and-a-half hours like the testlets from Part 1. Topics include endodontics, oral diagnosis, periodontics, patient management, and operative dentistry. It is generally taken after your third or fourth year in dental school.
This test can feel very overwhelming, meaning that the first step toward succeeding on it is calming yourself down. A private NBDE tutor can administer practice exams so that you know exactly what is expected of you. They can also help you practice maintaining your concentration for seven hours at a time, as intellectual endurance is one of the primary skills tested by the NBDE.
The results of your practice tests can also be used to guide future study sessions. If you aced the biochemistry portion but didn't fare as well with anatomic sciences, your sessions can focus on the latter. If you struggle to bring your academic knowledge to bear in a practical setting on Day 2 of Part 2, your NBDE tutor can review the thought processes you need to follow. Either way, engaging a private tutor ensures that you have access to a knowledgeable expert who can answer any questions you have in a timely manner.
If you're ready to start working with a NBDE tutor, we can help you find an experienced professional who fits into your schedule.
