This is the forest primeval. The murmuring pines and the hemlocks,

What word could be substituted for “primeval” without disrupting the meaning of line 1?

Based on the references to “bearded” trees, “Druids of eld,” and “harpers hoar,” we can infer that the author is trying to convey the impression of great age.
