This afternoon we had another "Marathon" session and accomplished the ambitious goals that the student had set. She is currently working on a number of major assignments and continuing to prepare for exams this week. She has become an expert at test preparation, differentiating between those she can study for on her own and those for which she cannot really study. We briefly discussed ways that she might be able to "rehearse" for a Spanish audio test, for example, but she seems quite confident in this subject. Of the two major assignments that will be imminently due, we first tackled the annotated bibliography for Psychology. This project involves finding a total of nine sources (three articles for three different questions) and then preparing annotations for all nine. The assignment calls for critical thinking and requires the ability to distinguish between an abstract (summary) and an annotation. Each of these annotations is to be approximately 150 words and they require that she summarize the central theme and scope of the articles and then comment on their relevance, accuracy, and quality. When I arrived, she had completed one of these annotations, which I read and then offered some suggestions for revision. We then set to the task of writing and editing the annotations for the five other articles she had previously found, in addition to the three she still needed. We worked together diligently for three hours, looking closely at each article for its academic credibility as well as content. She worked diligently and was able to maintain focus through this arduous task. Once completed, she moved on to study for her math test while I proofread her draft of her research paper for History. The essay is due on Tuesday and we need to lengthen it to meet the page requirements. I read carefully, looking for any area in the paper where we could utilize "meta-commentary" to develop one of the ideas more fully. I also identified one sub-topic that, if needed, could be added to what she already has written. Understandably, she is a bit reluctant to pursue that option, as it requires going back into a search for another source. I also edited the essay for word choice and punctuation, and made some relatively minor suggestions. This was a lengthy but an excellent session, for she is now able to look forward to an evening free of any arduous homework and is in an excellent position to meet the demands of the week ahead.

I helped the student prepare for a civics key terms quiz, and we worked on a review of a Bible commentary (John 15) as well as the Chapter 24 reading questions from his civics text book. The student struggled with memorizing the contributions of a few key historical figures, but we reviewed a number of times until he got it. For his Bible commentary, the student also struggled this time because the verse was a bit more abstract than some previous ones. He did do very well answering the reading questions so far, and we will finish the Chapter 25 questions during tomorrow's session.

After losing his planner, the student's mom helped him to create a new one with more space. This binder-planner is also organized by subject, rather than by calendar. The front sleeve has a month calendar - his schedule printed from the family calendar - but so far that is the only time view. The paper inserts for each subject had a line for a date - I encouraged the use of DAY and DATE and suggested the line is large enough if he uses a one or two letter abbreviation for the day (M, Tu, W, Th, F) - I advised against T for Tuesday and H for Thursday (something he says a teacher used previously) since they can be confusing at a glance. My only addition to this planner is a "week" view placed in the FRONT where he can use "short hand" for his assignments/obligations so he can see when items layer-up (such as 3 tests this Thursday). We went through last week's checklist and his success level was emailed to Mom. I explained to the student that with this new planner version that we should get off the checklist. At this point his focus needs to be on the planner lists and doing things SOONER rather than later. We then went over the Theology flash cards he had shared with me and corrected them per my comments. I explained how he can and should better craft the "explanation" side by using his own words, not just copying from the book. Capitalization was again stressed. He also asked if he should pay attention to and/or read parts of a chapter if the teacher doesn't go over it. I told him unless directly told not to, teachers hold students accountable for all information, especially that not covered directly in class. I have a feeling this has been a huge factor in him thinking his teachers are testing him on information he has not learned (in theology and history especially since he has claimed to me in the past that no readings had been assigned for entire units at a time!). We also went over the comments I made on his history document. I stressed again that he needs to review the entire document daily. This most certainly involves the bare minimum of reading the questions. The more he reads the questions, the more his brain will be triggered to "wake up" when certain topics are broached in class. I think if he follows through with this he will start catching more items he thinks are not being covered. A correlation to this is also that when readings are assigned in a schedule they are expected to be completed prior to the class, not the day of or that evening. It is not homework after-the-fact, it is preparation for that date.

Today reviewed the student's progress in her chemistry class. She is doing better on her tests. We reviewed her chapter review pages for this semester and identified the topics she needed to review and study. This narrowed the content considerably and helped her narrow her focus for review of previous chapters. She identified terms in chapter 13 and formulas which she added to her study review for this week. This strategy should help her test performance and improve her grade in her chemistry class. Her chemistry teacher includes questions from previous chapters on each test. The student was focused and cooperative today.
