I am extremely passionate about academics and learning; the value of each was inculcated into me at a very young age. I tutor a variety of subjects largely because I have so many areas of interests and have been privileged enough to pursue knowledge in those areas. I even enjoy tucking away "useless facts"...in fact, those very tidbits got me past the Jeopardy! Online Test and into the Contestant Audition!

I'm a big Boston Celtics fan and I speak three languages. I can get you the test results you need to succeed because I went through the exams myself and performed well. The first time I took the SAT I actually wasn't satisfied with my score, so I spent 2 months working hard to get my score to where I wanted it to be. The second time I took the exam I saw a 200-point increase. Previously, I have had experience teaching the SSAT and the SAT. The student I tutored in SSAT successfully passed the exam is now attending a private high school abroad. With VarsityTutor's online learning platform, I will be able to transfer knowledge in a visual, easy-to-understand manner. I look forward to being your tutor and helping you reach your academic goals. :)

I'm communicating and working with a pupil that I get a proper indication of how to work best with them. It's crucial to understand every student is different. There are always indications on how to handle/work with each student. For example, with a hostile student I would try to ease off and allow them to talk whilst making the material seem personal and easygoing. With a more outgoing and confident student, I would invite them to be challenged in our studies, as they usually work best with a challenge.

I am most passionate about math though, because it can be related to any subject, and because the skills that are developed through mathematical thinking can help create success in other areas. I try to use multiple approaches while teaching, and present ideas as visually and tangibly as possible. One of the dangers of learning math is that students memorize the method for solving a problem but do not realize the underlying concepts. I do my best to ensure that students recognize the broader concepts. Because math builds on itself, it is also very important to look at past topics that relate to students’ current lessons. There is not always time for teachers do this in a classroom setting. Often you’ll find that a student’s struggles come from missing previous skills that are assumed as their lessons advance. My ultimate goal is to help students build their confidence with math and to set them up for success in their future studies, whether those studies are directly or indirectly related.

I'm a recent graduate of Case Western Reserve University with a B.A. in Biology and Cognitive Science, as well as a minor in French. I'm interested in going back to school for either environmental studies or law, but I still have some deciding to do in that regard! My tutoring experience has been varied, from helping peers with homework, assisting my young nephews and nieces with their reading and writing, to mentoring the younger students at the dance studio I used to attend. These are just some of the ways that I've learned to tutor. My favorite things to tutor are writing and algebra. Both are things that can appear complicated and difficult, but often there is only one stumbling block that a student is having a problem with. Once you isolate the issue, everything becomes simple! My tutoring style is to talk and work through a lot of practice problems together. When the student feels comfortable tackling some practice problems on their own, I know they've mastered the concept. I'm also a great listener; if you tell me that you are having a problem in a certain area of a subject, I can very much tailor the lesson and practice problems to the target area. Outside of school, I spend a lot of my time submerged in water! I love windsurfing, scuba diving, and going to the beach. I'm also a huge, huge fan of snow! I ski every chance I get, and lately I've been getting into snowboarding! When I'm just relaxing, I enjoy a good book, a hot mug of tea, and fuzzy blankets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fifth grade marks a critical transition where students shift from learning to read to reading to learn. The main challenges include multi-step word problems in math (fractions, decimals, and division), transitioning from narrative writing to expository and persuasive essays, understanding complex texts with multiple themes, and developing organizational skills for longer assignments. Many students also struggle with the increased independence expected—managing multiple subjects, due dates, and study strategies without the constant scaffolding of earlier grades. Personalized tutoring addresses these gaps by breaking complex skills into manageable steps and building confidence in areas where students feel overwhelmed.

Fractions require students to think about numbers in an entirely new way—not as whole quantities, but as parts of a whole. This abstract shift is fundamentally different from the concrete arithmetic of earlier grades. Students often confuse fraction rules (like why you can't just add numerators and denominators), struggle to visualize equivalent fractions, and panic when decimals enter the picture. A tutor experienced with 5th grade can use visual models, real-world contexts (like pizza slices or measuring cups), and strategic practice to help students build true understanding rather than memorizing procedures. This foundation is essential because fractions appear throughout middle school algebra and geometry.

Fifth graders often excel at storytelling but struggle when asked to explain, inform, or persuade—skills that require organizing ideas logically and supporting claims with evidence. Expert tutors break this down by teaching the structure of expository writing (clear topic sentences, supporting details, logical organization), modeling how to gather and organize information before writing, and providing guided practice with real topics students care about. Tutors also help students understand the difference between "showing" a story and "telling" information, which is a conceptual leap many 5th graders find confusing. Regular feedback on drafts, combined with explicit instruction on revision strategies, helps students build confidence and competence in these new writing forms.

By 5th grade, students need to move beyond basic decoding to understand complex texts with multiple characters, subplots, themes, and inferences. They should identify main ideas and supporting details, summarize longer passages, make predictions, and analyze author's purpose. Many 5th graders can read the words fluently but struggle to understand deeper meaning or connect ideas across a text. Tutors help by teaching explicit comprehension strategies—like asking questions before, during, and after reading, making predictions, and visualizing scenes—and providing practice with texts at the right difficulty level. This targeted support prevents comprehension gaps from widening and builds the critical thinking skills needed for middle school literature and content-area reading.

Fifth grade is when students are expected to manage multiple assignments, remember due dates, organize materials, and study independently—skills that don't always come naturally. Many 5th graders struggle with time management, lose assignments, or don't know how to approach studying for a test. Expert tutors teach practical systems: breaking large projects into smaller steps, using checklists and calendars, organizing materials by subject, and developing study routines. Tutors also model how to approach different types of assignments (math practice vs. reading comprehension vs. research projects) and help students reflect on what study strategies actually work for them. These meta-cognitive skills pay dividends throughout middle and high school.

Excellent 5th grade tutors understand child development at this critical transition age and can teach across multiple subjects (math, reading, writing, science, social studies) with equal expertise. They should have experience identifying specific learning gaps—not just knowing that a student "struggles with math," but pinpointing whether the issue is with fractions, multi-step problems, or computational fluency. Strong tutors are skilled at breaking complex concepts into smaller steps, using multiple representations (visual, verbal, concrete), and adjusting their approach when a student doesn't understand. They also understand 5th grade standards and curriculum, know how to build a student's confidence during this vulnerable transition year, and can communicate progress clearly to parents. Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who have demonstrated expertise in working with 5th graders across core subjects.

Progress in 5th grade tutoring shows up in multiple ways: improved grades and test scores on unit assessments, but also increased confidence when tackling challenging problems, willingness to attempt difficult assignments without frustration, and better understanding of concepts (not just memorized procedures). You might notice a student explaining their thinking more clearly, catching their own mistakes, or asking smarter questions. In writing, progress means more organized essays with better supporting details. In reading, it's deeper comprehension and ability to discuss themes. Importantly, you'll also see improvements in independence and organization—students managing their materials better, remembering assignments, and developing study habits. A tutor should track specific skills and share concrete examples of growth, not just general statements about "trying harder."

This depends on the individual student. Some 5th graders need intensive support in one area (like math fractions or writing) while performing well in others—in these cases, focused tutoring on that subject makes sense. Other students struggle across multiple areas due to gaps in foundational skills, learning differences, or the general transition stress of 5th grade. Many parents find it helpful to start with one or two subjects where the student is most frustrated, build confidence and skills there, then expand if needed. A tutor can assess where the biggest gaps are and recommend a starting point. The key is that 5th grade is still young enough to close gaps relatively quickly with targeted support, so early intervention in any struggling area pays off significantly.
