I am a freshman at Caltech majoring in Applied and Computational Mathematics. My favorite subject to tutor is math because I find it very rewarding to simplify complex topics to aid in understanding. I have lots of tutoring experience. In high school, I ran and taught an SAT prep class and was vice president of my school's NHS chapter where I ran our tutoring program, and I, myself, tutored. I also was a teaching assistant in the summer of 2020 for a class in discrete mathematics through a program called PACT (Program in Algorithmic and Combinatorial Thinking). I even enjoy tucking away "useless facts"...in fact, those very tidbits got me past the Jeopardy! Online Test and into the Contestant Audition!

I'm a big Boston Celtics fan and I speak three languages. I can get you the test results you need to succeed because I went through the exams myself and performed well. The first time I took the SAT I actually wasn't satisfied with my score, so I spent 2 months working hard to get my score to where I wanted it to be. The second time I took the exam I saw a 200-point increase. Previously, I have had experience teaching the SSAT and the SAT. The student I tutored in SSAT successfully passed the exam is now attending a private high school abroad. With VarsityTutor's online learning platform, I will be able to transfer knowledge in a visual, easy-to-understand manner. I am a rising junior at Vanderbilt University studying chemical engineering and mathematics. Throughout high school, I tutored both individuals and groups in a variety of subjects including algebra and physics. At Vanderbilt, I've had the opportunity to teach at local Nashville elementary and middle schools as part of Vanderbilt Student Volunteers for Science. I am passionate about tutoring math and science, and even though these subjects are often considered "dry," the right teaching style can spark any student's interest. When it comes to standardized test preparation, I've found that knowing the intricacies of a test can improve a student's score just as much as knowing the subject material can. Different students learn in different ways but that kind of personal attention is difficult to provide in a classroom. With one on one tutoring sessions, any student can excel, even in the subjects he or she has the most trouble in. When I tutor a student, my first goal is to figure out the best way to teach this individual, as no single style can suit everybody. In my free time, I enjoy playing volleyball, watching football and soccer, exercising, and reading about modern science and new technology.

I am a patient teacher who can explain problems in many different ways according to how individual students learn best. I only ask that you know and explain to me what topics you do not know or get so far. I know that every student can learn a subject with a combination of practice and patience, but I insist upon consistent effort and sessions. As an educator I do not support last minute cramming as the primary learning method of content for students as it does not lead to retention of material, mastery of larger themes, or the ability to differentiate between subtle differences when problem-solving on tests and exams. I will help my clients when they need extra sessions before Final Exams and AP Exams, but those who have been working the hardest throughout the school year to regularly improve will get preference over those students who are panicked at the last minute, but have put off meeting with me.

I am most passionate about math though, because it can be related to any subject, and because the skills that are developed through mathematical thinking can help create success in other areas. I try to use multiple approaches while teaching, and present ideas as visually and tangibly as possible. One of the dangers of learning math is that students memorize the method for solving a problem but do not realize the underlying concepts. I do my best to ensure that students recognize the broader concepts. Because math builds on itself, it is also very important to look at past topics that relate to students’ current lessons. There is not always time for teachers do this in a classroom setting. Often you’ll find that a student’s struggles come from missing previous skills that are assumed as their lessons advance. My ultimate goal is to help students build their confidence with math and to set them up for success in their future studies, whether those studies are directly or indirectly related.

Frequently Asked Questions

Seventh grade marks a significant transition where students move from concrete to abstract thinking. The most common struggles include mastering multi-step math problems (especially pre-algebra concepts like variables and equations), managing increased reading comprehension demands across multiple subjects, organizing longer-term assignments, and balancing multiple teachers' expectations. Many students also struggle with the social-emotional aspects of middle school, which can impact focus and motivation. Personalized tutoring helps by addressing gaps in foundational skills while building confidence during this critical transition year.

Seventh grade is when students encounter variables, equations, and abstract mathematical thinking for the first time—a major cognitive shift from concrete arithmetic. Tutors work on building number sense, fraction and decimal mastery, and proportional reasoning, which are essential prerequisites for algebra success. They also help students develop problem-solving strategies and teach them to translate word problems into equations. With personalized instruction, students can move at their own pace and get immediate feedback on misconceptions before they compound into deeper struggles with algebraic thinking.

Seventh graders are expected to read longer, more complex texts across subjects (literature, history, science) and extract main ideas, supporting details, and author's purpose—not just recall facts. They also need to write multi-paragraph essays with clear thesis statements, organize arguments logically, and cite evidence. Many students struggle with close reading, inference, and synthesizing information across multiple sources. Tutors help by teaching active reading strategies, breaking down complex texts, and providing structured writing frameworks that make these skills manageable and transferable across all classes.

Seventh grade requires students to manage multiple classes, longer assignments, and greater independence—a significant jump from elementary school structure. Many students struggle with time management, note-taking, studying for tests, and breaking large projects into steps. Expert tutors go beyond subject content to teach organizational systems, help students develop study habits, and model how to approach unfamiliar problems independently. This meta-learning is crucial at this age, as it builds confidence and sets students up for success not just in 7th grade, but throughout middle and high school.

Effective 7th grade tutors understand the developmental stage—they recognize that students are transitioning from concrete to abstract thinking and adjust their explanations accordingly. They should have strong subject knowledge across core subjects (math, English, science, social studies), experience identifying and addressing knowledge gaps, and the ability to build student confidence during a vulnerable time. Great tutors also understand middle school dynamics and can motivate students who may be struggling with the social aspects of school. Look for tutors who can explain concepts multiple ways, ask good questions to check understanding, and help students develop independent learning skills alongside content mastery.

Seventh grade students arrive with widely different preparation levels—some have solid elementary foundations while others have gaps in basic skills. Personalized tutoring begins by identifying exactly where each student is, whether that's filling holes in fractions and decimals, building reading fluency, or challenging advanced students with deeper problem-solving. A tutor working one-on-one can adjust the pace, complexity, and teaching approach to match each student's current level and learning style. This flexibility is especially important in 7th grade, where the range of readiness is often wider than in elementary school.

Progress in 7th grade shows up in multiple ways: improved test and quiz scores, stronger performance on multi-step problem sets, more organized and coherent writing, increased class participation, and greater confidence tackling unfamiliar material. Students often show growth in their ability to explain their thinking, ask clarifying questions, and catch their own mistakes. Beyond grades, you'll notice students becoming more independent—they start studying without prompting, approach homework with less frustration, and develop a growth mindset about challenges. Tutoring success in 7th grade is measured not just by current grades, but by the skills and confidence students build for the years ahead.

This depends on the individual student. Some students have one clear weak area (like math) while excelling elsewhere, and focused tutoring in that subject makes sense. Others struggle across multiple subjects due to organizational issues, reading comprehension gaps, or confidence problems—in these cases, working with a tutor on foundational skills like reading, writing, and study habits can have ripple effects across all classes. Many families start with one subject and add support in another as the student gains confidence. A tutor can help assess whether a student needs targeted help or broader academic skills support.
