Varsity Tutors provides a Tampa ACT course to help students prepare for this important exam. The ACT is one type of assessment used by colleges to determine whether to accept applicants, based on their scores on the test. Although there's no penalty for wrong answers (you can guess without point deductions), the number of questions you answer correctly demonstrate your proficiency in key subject areas.

A Tampa ACT prep course covers the topics on the exam and can introduce you to test-taking skills that may improve your pacing, ability, and confidence. The ACT is a 2-hour, 55-minute exam with Math, Reading, English, and Science Sections. The ACT Plus Writing exam is 3-hours, 35 minutes without breaks. If you're approaching graduation from area institutions like Plant High School or Robinson High School, it's important to consider the type of preparation that's best for you so you can improve on learning and skills gaps ahead of the test.

What Does a Tampa ACT Class Cover?

Each class is structured so that any concept tested on is covered. You'll get a rundown on the topics you can expect to see in each of the ACT's four sections: Math, Reading, English, and Science. In addition, practice can be provided so you know what is expected if you're taking the optional Writing section. A wide range of skills are covered on the exam, so a prep class is a good idea at this stage.

The Math section is 60 minutes with 60 multiple-choice questions. That gives you a minute to answer each question, but you must be proficient in pre-algebra, intermediate algebra, coordinate and plane geometry, and trigonometry. All math from elementary to the start of grade 12 is covered. Your working knowledge of number systems, graphing, problem-solving, interpreting equations, functions, geometric measurements, and probability must be up to par.

Comprising 40 passage-based questions, the Reading section is 35 minutes. To perform as expected, you must demonstrate reading comprehension at a first-year college level. The skills tested on include identifying the meaning of words and phrases, central ideas and themes, and the difference between facts and opinions. You'll also need to make connections between different texts provided. A separate English section is 45 minutes long, during which you must complete 75 questions. It tests your language skills and understanding of grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure.

The Science section spans 35 minutes of the ACT. It includes 40 questions that measure a student's ability to analyze, interpret, and evaluate information, as well as their reasoning and problem-solving skills related to chemistry, physics, biology, and Earth/space science. Data are presented in different formats, which you must analyze and manipulate. It's also essential to be familiar with the scientific method and how scientific experiments and investigations are designed.

How Can a Tampa ACT Course Help Me Prepare for the Exam?

An ACT course provides a comprehensive review of the subjects you've learned up until senior year in high school. Whether you need to read passages more thoroughly or need practice in algebraic equations, your instructor can explain these during online collaborative lessons with all your peers present. They can also schedule one-on-one sessions if you still have trouble with a concept. The process is therefore very flexible, down to the times you can sign up for. Courses start weekly and last for two or four-weeks; the schedule is determined by which course you sign up for.

Each Tampa ACT class is held online, over a live learning platform accessible on any Internet-enabled device. You can see, hear, and interact with your instructor and classmates as if they were in the room with you. Instructors that guide these classes are vetted to ensure they have the proper qualifications and are able to communicate key ideas. You get to work in groups, which is beneficial because collaborating can help you better understand topics related to the ACT.

In addition, ACT prep is provided in several ways. Besides reviewing academic subjects you've been learning since elementary school, your instructor can provide practice tests. By answering practice questions like the ones on the exam, you can identify weaker subject areas and become more familiar with the ACT's format. Test-taking skills and strategies can be taught as well. For example, if you stumble upon a hard question, you might skip it for later or eliminate wrong answers based on the phrasing of the question and your general knowledge.

Your grammar and punctuation might be impeccable, but drafting an essay might take more time than expected. Since you only have 40 minutes to complete the optional Writing section, you'll need to be able to interpret writing prompts and organize your perspective and compare it to another. Practice in this area can help you more efficiently develop your ideas and produce quality text.

Pacing is another challenge with the ACT. You must be ready to go from the start, which is promptly at 8:00 a.m., but the exam isn't over until 12:35 p.m., or with the ACT Plus Writing, at around 1:35 p.m. You'll also need to follow rules such as using #2 pencils and only permitted calculators for the Math section. You may also be required to complete a short experimental section.
