Varsity Tutors is proud to offer premium Tampa LSAT prep services to students interested in taking their test prep to the next level. The Law School Admission Test (LSAT) is a standardized exam written to measure the skills most predictive of law school success. It is the only test considered valid by ABA-accredited law schools throughout the United States, including Stetson University College of Law. Preparing for this challenging assessment can feel daunting, but you can do it with the right supports in place.
We can find you two great ways to study for this exam. First, we can provide a Tampa LSAT prep course where you can study for the LSAT in a convenient virtual classroom. Alternatively, we can help you connect with a knowledgeable Tampa LSAT tutor who can accommodate your preferred learning style. Regardless of which one you choose, you'll wonder why you ever tried to study for a test without professional assistance!
What topics can I study during my Tampa LSAT prep?
The LSAT is a digital test with a total of four sections and a total testing time of nearly three hours. The first three (Reading Comprehension, Analytical Reasoning, and Logical Reasoning) are multiple-choice and taken on a tablet. You use the device's touchscreen to indicate your answers, making for a unique testing experience. The tablet also offers handy features such as an automatic five-minute warning, flagging functionality to quickly return to previous exam items, and highlighting capabilities. You must return the tablet to the testing center at the conclusion of your test. You will receive a score from 120-180 on this portion of the test, and there is no penalty for guessing.
The fourth section of the LSAT is Writing, and it is taken in a separate testing session and on a different device from the rest of the exam. You have exactly one calendar year from the date you took the first three sections to arrange an appointment for the Writing section. The Essay section is not directly scored, instead serving as the writing sample you submit with each application you send out.
Here is a closer look at what you can expect to see on each section of the LSAT:
Reading Comprehension
The Reading Comprehension section emphasizes dense texts comparable to what lawyers read while preparing their cases. You need to be able to identify the main idea and its supporting details, understand how factors such as organization and tone affect an author's message, define unfamiliar words and phrases using the context they are placed in, and draw inferences beyond what is directly stated in the text.
Analytical Reasoning
The Analytical Reasoning section measures how well you understand the structure of relationships and your ability to draw conclusions from them. Some of the skills assessed include evaluating truth statements, recognizing logically-equivalent statements, and reasoning with conditional statements. If you have ever studied logic problems in a mathematics course, you have a rough sense of the types of questions you'll see in this section.
Logical Reasoning
The Logical Reasoning section is all about evaluating and completing arguments. You'll work with arguments from a diverse array of sources, including magazines, newspapers, informal discourse, advertisements, and scholarly articles. You are expected to recognize points of misunderstanding or disagreement, draw solid conclusions, identify fallacies in an argument, and look at how an argument might change if new evidence is added. While every LSAT section has a duration of 35 minutes, you take a total of two Logical Reasoning sections for 70 minutes of testing time.
Writing
Finally, the Writing section presents test-takers with a decision problem and two points of view on how to proceed. You select one of them and write an original argumentative essay defending your position. There is no right answer on which side to support, as law schools are only looking at your use of evidence, reasoning, clarity, language choice, organization, and written communication skills to see if you are prepared for law school. This section is very important even if it does not receive a quantifiable score, so make sure to approach it seriously.
What are some of the advantages offered by each of the Tampa LSAT preparation options available to me?
If you enroll in a Tampa LSAT prep class, you'll study with a knowledgeable teacher and a handful of like-minded students during weekly class sessions. Our live virtual platform makes you feel as though you are all in the same room, without the hassle of commuting to a physical classroom each week. You can ask for help by raising your hand and even interact with your classmates while your teacher is helping somebody else.
Many students underestimate the benefits of studying with others. For example, reviewing essay outlines of opposite viewpoints can help you develop a more comprehensive understanding of a decision problem. Similarly, you can take turns adopting the role of devil's advocate to practice using evidence to support a position. You also save money by studying in a group, as you can all split the associated costs. You can arrange private study time with your teacher if you feel you need extra help with something.
If you want to study in a one-on-one learning environment, we can facilitate that too. Working with a private instructor allows you to proceed at your own pace, whether that means moving more quickly to keep study sessions engaging or more slowly so that your instructor can help you understand a tricky topic. Your instructor can also design sessions around your unique learning style to enhance your study efficiency.
Many students also take practice exams during private study sessions to help them feel more prepared for the actual exam. Every exam words things differently, and developing a familiarity with how the LSAT words questions can make it easier to quickly identify exactly what a question is asking you. You can also experience the time available to you firsthand, helping you budget it effectively on the actual test.
