Tutoring review by John in Bell Gardens, CA
The student has a test scheduled for this Wednesday. He told me that the tests, like the homework, are divided into questions of three difficulty levels. He typically has no problems with the easy and medium questions. I offered him some general strategies for proofs and test review. We also worked through all of the hard problems from his homework assignments from the chapter. He did fairly well given the difficulty. He learned the likelihood of hitting a dead end and the importance of not giving up. He also planned a strategy for this test that will hopefully improve his time management and performance.

The student finished the Algebra diagnostic test that I assigned her. We looked through the tests to see what areas or problems she is weak in, and I helped her on those problems. The test problems I helped her with involved solving for x directly or by factoring, simplifying square roots, word problems, and finding areas of a circle or triangles. At the end of the session, I gave her homework that covers graphing linear and quadratic functions and solving for x.

Tutoring review by Cornelia in Bell Gardens, CA
Today we explored the relationship between multiplication and division. The specific strategy we used was fact families. She was allowed to skip count and illustrate to find the four problems that corresponded with the three digits. We ended our session with a bit of multidigit addition and subtraction. All in all, the student did a great job today. Finding the connection between division and multiplication is quite a 3rd grade accomplishment. She will be well ahead of her peers!

Tutoring review by Richard in Bell Gardens, CA
The student was focused and on track tonight. During our session, we reviewed upcoming assignments in Humanities and Math. Between the two classes (which includes traditional Honors English), we tallied about 2 hours of study time needed for assignments due tomorrow. Those assignments included completing an entry for Journal 9, finalizing the Artist Name Project, and finishing 3 more scenarios as part of the Retirement Planning spreadsheet series (that also includes short-term and mid-term financial planning along with college financial planning). Additional preparation includes continuing to read, 'Black Boy,' by Richard Wright (pp.102-169) and the completion of a Literary Luminary assignment on the author, which is due on Tuesday. We began to look at upcoming projects for Honors English. In our next session, we will block out a calendar that includes 'Scarlet Letter' projects with monthly respective deadlines. Most of these major projects require considerable research, preparation time, and creative writing skills. The student sees that she can achieve at a much higher level with this advanced planning while at the same time reducing her own stress level.

We covered cellular respiration. Because this section of the material is content heavy, I drew out several connected diagrams to explain to the student why molecules flow in such a direction. Later, she filled out her own plan worksheet to label these parts. She is very self motivated!

During this session, Student 1 and I went over matrices for PreCalc and the photoelectric effect for chemistry. We did a few examples for PreCalc and mostly looked at notes for chemistry. Overall, this session went well. During the session with Student 2, we went over math questions on circles, completing the square, and synthetic division. Overall, this session went well.
