Recent Cary Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Alexandra in Cary, IL
The student and I met for the second time this week and continued preparing her for her math test Thursday and science test Friday. She had almost completed all of her notecards, but made note that she was somewhat overwhelmed by the assignment. I took some time to explain that by taking the time to better prepare for her quizzes and exams, she will save time going forward since she will not have to take time to meet with teachers or schedule re-take tests if she is mastering the material ahead of her assessments! I also explained that when she gets in the habit of making flashcards, she can begin to make them a few at a time as soon as an assignment or study guide is given to her. We then moved on to going through her science flashcards and printing out the study guide so that she could make the last of her cards the following night. After this review, we focused our efforts on completing her angles assignment and going back through her math packet. The student became increasingly comfortable with both solving algebraic word problems and simplifying expressions. I created a number of new problems so that she could also work with equations she has not seen before. I encouraged her to double check her answers on her test by plugging them back into the original equation and also emphasized to be meticulous with the details such as signs, "foiling" out a problem, and using correct common denominators.

We went through the student's review for her test. It was about probability and series. I explained the questions that she needed help with and then asked her to solve them by herself to make sure she understood how she has to do them. We solved different problems on each concept. She understood how to do them. She is doing well. She will continue to practice these problems before the test.

We went over his algebra review this session. He grasps how to solve the questions easily for this class. I asked him a few questions from each section that I thought he'd make simple mistakes on and made him find and correct them.

Today was our last session. We just did reviews on techniques. We looked at reading comprehension and analogies, as that was what the boys wanted to look at in more detail. I advised them to pay close attention to the questions. They were a pleasure to tutor and seem very well prepared for their exam.
