Tutoring review by Michael in Garden Grove, CA
Today, we covered graphing polynomial and rational functions. The student had a good understanding of the material in general. We started out be classifying functions, which required me explaining how to determine whether something is a polynomial or not. We then went on to graphing rational functions. I helped the student develop a method of finding asymptotes, then intercepts, then finding other points if needed. The student has a good understanding, but will need to practice this a little more in order to make it feel routine.

Today, we worked on graphing absolute value functions. We graphed the translations, reflections of the absolute value functions. We completed the worksheet the student had for homework and later looked at the textbook problems and worked on those towards the end of the session.

The student and I used multiplication flashcards to practice numbers, I showed them to him in very fast succession and he would give me the result. He did an excellent job and his pronunciation is very close to native-like. Also, we used noun cards; he would see the English side and give me the name of the object in Spanish, then proceed to make a sentence using present and preterit.

Tutoring review by Laura in Garden Grove, CA
Today, we reviewed the student's homework. He did not take a test this past week, but he has two this week. He does well with geometry concepts and finding the unknown number in an equation. He also does well with word problems and prime factorization. Where he has trouble is finding the unknown mixed number in a subtraction problem. I taught him one way of doing it today with drawing a picture, and on Tuesday, when I see him again, I will teach him another way.

We rolled out the action plan for the student's next steps in her field work. Her current struggle is to lock down dates; she has made several attempts, and I now am working with her to secure her field work. She is very positive, and we are working through her concerns as a team. We are currently creating a notebook for her observation session.

Tutoring review by Joseph in Garden Grove, CA
The student and I worked on the study packet for his upcoming algebra final on January 13. Much like previous sections, the bulk of our work was done focusing on factoring. We worked on factoring in area/ perimeter problems, factoring in word problems, how to create an equation from a word problem, and similar issues. He was a little rusty coming off the long holiday break, but I was encouraged that after we began working a problem together. It typically would not take him a very long time to pick up and be able to finish the problems on his own. I'm trying to focus on making sure he understands the reasoning behind the methods his teacher uses to solve problems. Often times he still makes small errors because he's trying to remember what numbers to plug in where, instead of thinking about what the problem is asking him and what information is provided to him. Familiarity and confidence with the material will help this issue more over time.
