Tutoring review by Lyra in Herndon, VA
Tonight the student and I reviewed for her upcoming test in exponential/ logarithmic functions. We covered a lot of material, including how to switch between exponential/ logarithmic form, the rules for logarithm expansion/ contraction, how to solve a variety of different equations in those forms, compound interest and other exponential growth formulas, and how to work with the graphs of these functions in general. She was studious and followed along rather well with the lesson, and by the end of the night she was quickly and easily calling out the formulas she needed. I think we made some important improvements to her methods and content knowledge.

Tutoring review by Frances in Herndon, VA
The homework we worked on covered lateral and total surface area and also reviewed volumes (from an earlier section). Student A struggled more with the concept than student B, so I spent a little extra time with him going over the difference between lateral and total surface area. As usual, both of the boys did great work with the multiple choice questions and used very good reasoning skills to eliminate unreasonable and impossible answer choices. We are definitely continuing to emphasize working slowly, reading the whole question and double-checking our work. Great job to both boys! I believe that they felt confident in the concepts by the end of the night.

Today, we learned more about quadratic equations and graphs. Specifically, we went over how to solve for x by graphing and algebraically. The student is starting to get the hang of parabolas, and doesn't think they're as bad as before anymore which is great.

Tutoring review by Rachel in Herndon, VA
In the session today we focused mainly on test prep and went over the quadratic formula, factoring polynomials, and complex imaginary equations. The main topic that the student was struggling with was the quadratic formula, and that was just with remembering the actual formula. His confidence in his math ability has grown over the last week and he is more comfortable with a wider range of problems. He was able to factor polynomials on his own, where a few weeks ago this would have been a challenge.
