Recent Justice Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Catherine in Justice, IL
The student and I had a productive session. On a full-length, timed practice reading test, he correctly answered 35/40 questions for a score of 33 or 34 on the section. Because he is scoring so high, we will rarely work on the reading section, though I will continue to assign practice sections to give him more experience and confidence. On a full-length, timed math section, he correctly answered 38/60 questions for a score of 24. He is showing really good judgement about which problems to solve and which to skip. We worked on two problems that asked him to apply Pythagorean Theorem to stories about distances traveled in given directions. We also reviewed supplementary angles and similar figures. He did a great job of applying the percent change formula to two questions and of remembering the equation for a circle. For problems in settings, he is doing a good job of highlighting peculiar language that hints at restrictions. We will continue to work on applying these crucial pieces of information. On a practice English passage, he correctly answered 15/15 questions. We reviewed dangling and misplaced modifiers. Because he is a highly verbal student who is scoring well on the Reading and English sections, I am curious about how he would score on the SAT.

Tutoring review by Andrew in Justice, IL
The student and I met to work on problems regarding buffers and calculating the pH of acids and bases. She had a few problems from her lab to work on that covered acids and bases. She was having trouble understanding when to use certain equations as well as when to use ICE tables to determine a value for a compound at equilibrium. We addressed both of these questions and she now has a better grasp on how to do this. Her confidence seems to be getting higher. In the coming session, we plan to meet to work on problems regarding titrations.

The student and I met for an hour and reviewed the vocabulary from his new chapter. His pronunciation is very good! He expressed interest in covering demonstrative adjectives in our next session, so I will prepare some exercises/conversational activities on the topic for next week.

Today I watched the student solve some addition and subtraction problems I created and we reviewed her errors. I stressed slowing down and pointing to each number. I gave her another timed quiz on multiplication tables. We also talked about square numbers, and I had her tell me different ways to make numbers. She demonstrated good number sense.

The student and I worked through the first three chapters of her AP Government course. We basically talked our way through most of the concepts. She made tremendous progress in the session. She seemed to pick up most of the concepts, though she needs to review the notes she took and go over the practice questions.

Tutoring review by Nicole in Justice, IL
For this session, the student completed most of his math homework. He worked on division with a single digit divisor, algebraic expressions, multiplication of 2 digit numbers, and adding fractions. He stayed focused and was receptive to feedback regarding how to divide using the method that he learned at school.
