Virology Tutoring FAQ
Viruses are among the most unique life forms on the planet. In fact, many scientists are unconvinced that they are living creatures at all. They straddle a unique region between life and non-life, and demand a unique approach for effective study. Many of the general principles you have likely come to expect to apply to cells are not applicable to viruses. The hours you spent learning about the functions of the Golgi body and even the basics of cellular respiration are not directly relevant to most viruses. The simplicity of viruses can be misleading. Many students may find relief when they hear that viruses have no organelles, no metabolism, and only basic genetics. In truth, however, all of these facts make viruses more complicated. These features are absent, but viruses survive without them. The complicated alternative pathways that viruses use to survive are often much more complex than strategies used by eukaryotes or bacteria. Additionally, because viruses are so simple, they have developed an array of parasitic relationships with many higher life forms. Any future study in pathology or medicine will demand a firm understanding of the principles introduced in virology courses. Instead of wasting weeks trying to develop an effective approach to learning about viruses, consider working with a talented virology tutor.
Varsity Tutors can help you connect with a one-on-one virology tutor from across the country that can help you master your course subject matter in an organized and efficient manner. With each session, you receive feedback, comments, and demonstrations that can allow you to better grasp each concept. Your tutor may provide personal learning materials as well, such as tests, books, or news pieces.
You can even return to challenging concepts from previous biology classes, which can be especially important considering how virology builds upon much earlier material. You tutor will not only prioritize your specific concerns with virology, but she or he will also prioritize making sessions convenient for you. You can schedule your virology tutoring to take place at the time and location that works best in your schedule. Recent Virology Tutoring Session Notes
The student and I continued working on his biology study guide. We covered the genetics section and the biochemistry section. After some time on Punnett squares and reviewing the different genetic nomenclature, he seemed much more confident when approaching these problems. We reviewed the differences between transcription and translation which he definitely seemed to understand.
The student and I finished reviewing her class notes from the semester. We did the cardiac system, immune system, endocrine system, plants, evolution and ecology. She is going to start on her terminology review packet on Sunday.
The student and I studied for her upcoming Biology exam. We focused on issues of genetics and genetic engineering, which her teacher had specified as the topics on the test. We also some reviewed some earlier biology concepts, especially DNA replication, evolution, and natural selection. In our remaining time, we completed her Algebra homework. She was challenged at first, but by the end of the worksheet, she seemed to have a solid handle on the material.
During our last session of the year, the student and I finished our final-exam preparation by going through the remainder of the true/false questions on the study guide and doing the short-answer questions. He made me very proud because he was prepared and answered a large amount of the questions correctly without my help; it speaks to the work he's been putting in all year. I am confident he will do well and end the year on a high note.
The student had 25 review questions for biology. She answered all of them correctly. She has a review packet to complete, and we went over two topics in preparation for the test. The topics were reproduction and homeostasis.
We are starting to prepare the student for her final exam for the semester. Her teacher provided a study sheet that contains a comprehensive overview of all of the topics that will be on the exam. We spent our time going over the chapter on transport systems. This included the xylem and phloem of plants and the human circulatory system. We approached each topic as a question and used key concepts to answer the questions. She struggled most with the human circulatory system, specifically the anatomy of it, so I provided her with an easy-to-follow guide covering anatomy. I then instructed her to use the answers as a review guide. I think she will do very well on the questions from this chapter.
