While college may be 2 years away, high school juniors should approach their applications with great effort. However, before the process begins, you should prepare for the ACT, which is one of the two top college admission exams. Most students in Washington, DC, including those that attend Woodrow Wilson High School and BASIS DC Public Charter School, may take this test as they apply to get into their top college choice. It's important students take it seriously because it may be one of the key factors in deciding what school will grant them acceptance.
The ACT is a comprehensive exam that has five sections. Whether you've just begun studying for it or you're taking another shot at it, you may be wondering what the best method is in terms of preparing for the actual test date. Maybe you've considered getting extra help in taking those exams. If you've decided to enroll in a Washington, DC ACT class, Varsity Tutors can get you started in one that suits your needs. We can help provide a guide to a great resource to assist you in studying for the exam.
What might a Washington, DC ACT prep course go over?
The test consists of four major sections: English, Reading, Math, and Science. The writing portion of the exam is optional. Altogether, the exam is just under 3 hours without breaks. If a student decides to do the ACT Plus Writing portion, another 40 minutes is tacked on to the exam. Here's a bit more detail into what expect from each section of the test.
The English section has 75 questions and allows you 45 minutes to complete it. Remember, the questions vary from asking you about a piece of the passage, the whole thing, or even just a sentence. This requires you to be very detailed with certain answers and more to the point with others. Be clear on tone, style, grammar, sentence structure, and overall usage. Also, it's helpful to make time to go back to the passages and review them again for editing purposes.
The Math section asks you to answer 60 questions in 60 minutes. Remember, it's important to remember that you want to pace yourself at a good speed and accuracy. You'll want to brush up on your pre-algebra, elementary algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. Within this portion, make sure that you have a good idea of number systems, number reasoning, interpreting equations, geometric shapes, and data collection.
Next, you'll go take on the Reading section. This is similar to the English section because you're interpreting passages. However, this time it's solely based on comprehension. Be clear on understanding the general theme of the context, different words and phrases, and get a handle on the connections of different texts to know the facts and opinions of each passage.
Now, you'll start the Science section. You'll deal with 40 questions in 35 minutes. This multiple-choice section requires you to have strong evaluation, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. Make sure to have great knowledge in the following subjects: biology, chemistry, Earth and space sciences, and physics.
The Writing Section is optional. If you decide to take this portion, you'll get an additional 40 minutes to write an essay on a topic. It's important to not only understand what the topic is talking about but also be able to intelligently argue your point of view. Not to mention, you'll want to make each statement clear and concise, and do so in a way that shows you have a solid grasp of the English language.

...I just graduated from Notre Dame with a degree in computer science. My teaching style is simple and relaxed, putting an emphasis on what students know already and building from there. The biggest teaching mistake I believe exists is starting from a concept that a student doesn't understand and unknowingly confusing them more.
