Working with a private ACT Aspire tutor can give your student the chance to explore the topics they find more challenging than others. Unlike traditional classroom-based learning, ACT Aspire tutors can create a custom-tailored learning plan that focuses on your student's individual needs. For example, they can take the time to get to know your student's learning preferences, interests, testing goals, and areas of opportunity to find the ideal approach for their test prep. Your student can work one-on-one with their ACT Aspire tutor as they prepare for this comprehensive exam. An efficient learning plan can help your student feel more interested in the material by allowing them to study in a way that is best for them.

We aim to connect you with a private instructor who has the experience and skills it takes to reach your student. They have built their testing skills and strategies to find a variety of ways to help a student understand the material. Your student's tutor can take the time to rephrase the information until they find the best way to explain it.

Private ACT Aspire tutoring aims to be flexible and convenient. Your student can dictate the pace of each study session as their instructor works patiently alongside them. They are free to work as slowly as they need to in order to feel comfortable with the material. Your student won't have to worry about feeling rushed or ignored as they explore the different sections of the test, practice their academic skills, and solve practice problems. ACT Aspire tutors can answer your student's questions as they come up, allowing them to prevent misunderstandings that could harm their confidence. Your student's instructor can even offer unique learning materials or activities that are suited to their interests to help them connect with the information. These materials may include diagrams, literature, games, video clips, and many other items chosen based on your student's learning style and interests.

The ACT Aspire expects test-takers to have a solid understanding of the materials they covered in their grade level. For example, third grade ACT Aspire students will need to be able to use claims to draw conclusions, interpret models, and explain their steps to arrive at a solution, among many other skills. Higher level students will be expected to demonstrate more advanced abilities among similar topics.

Here is a breakdown of the ACT Aspire standards:

ACT Aspire Standards

For parents, teachers, counselors, and students, these scores can:

  • Communicate widely shared learning goals and educational expectations
  • Relate test scores to skills that lead to success in high school and beyond
  • Unpack the complex set of skills students need to develop in English, mathematics, reading, science, and writing

One-on-one ACT Aspire tutoring can give your student a unique perspective on the test. Their ACT Aspire tutor can skip over the material your student feels confident in, allowing them to focus on the areas in which they have the most room for growth. Your student may take practice tests, which can be used to assess their readiness for the exam, identify key skills they need to build upon and help them feel more comfortable about the format of the test. Their tutor can readily adjust their teaching strategies to find new ways to help you relate to the material.

Your student won't have to worry about falling behind their ACT Aspire tutor. The instructor won't move on from a topic until your student understands it, whether they spend several sessions going over the information or only a few moments. Throughout your student's ACT Aspire tutoring sessions, they can practice multiplying fractions, editing their essays, draw connections within a passage, and other academic skills they will need to demonstrate on the test. Their instructor can patiently expand on the material, offering demonstrations and explanations that can help your student work through the information. Your student's ACT Aspire tutor can address their unique testing concerns to help them feel more comfortable on the day of the test. Their instructor aims to align their teaching goals with your student's testing and study goals. With individualized attention, your student can freely build their skills, whether they want to focus on mathematics concepts or their writing abilities.

Each grade level of the ACT Aspire follows their own Performance Level Descriptors. PLDs are used to identify the requirements of each content area of the test. The aim is to determine that students are prepared to move on to the next academic level, including college and career for high school students. The PLD is designed to be used by parents and educators to better understand the needs of each student as an individual. In addition, PLDs are used to create questions that are suited to assessing performance as outlined by the standards set by the PLD.

Below, you can explore the third-level PLD standards for the English section of the ACT Aspire:

While each grade level faces an exam of differing difficulty, the ACT Aspire spans five sections: Math, English, Reading, Writing, and Science. There is a mixture of different types of questions, including selected response, technology-enhanced, and constructed-response ones. Your student will need to demonstrate a variety of skills, including the ability to integrate topics and skills to solve problems. Different grade levels are given a different amount of time to complete each section. For example, early high school students are given 45 minutes on the English section while 6th-grade students have 40 minutes.

Your student can take advantage of the many benefits offered by an ACT Aspire tutor. Their tutor can introduce them to a variety of unique test-taking strategies. Perhaps your student has trouble managing their time to complete each portion of the exam within the allotted time frame. They can spend ACT Aspire tutoring sessions practicing different techniques to ease their stress, allow them to recall information on the spot, and maximize their time for the exam. These skills can benefit your student on future assessment exams that they may face, such as the ACT, SAT, and more. Furthermore, your student's ACT Aspire tutor can help them practice study techniques that can enhance their independent efforts even after they've completed their exam.

Thorough test prep can make a difference in your student's performance on the ACT Aspire. Since this test is used to track their growth and development, as well as to determine their overall readiness, the exam can give your student's instructors insight into their individual academic needs. An ACT Aspire tutor can help your student take their test-prep efforts to a new level in their pursuit of achieving an accurate score.

Recent ACT Aspire Tutoring Session Notes

Online ACT Aspire Tutoring review by Allison
The student and I spent the first hour and a half or so of our session continuing to work through the math portion of the practice exam. He is able to use most of the problems involving logic, and to narrow down answer choices to apply a "guess and check" strategy to the more complicated problems. In general, his math skills are strong. We then spent the last 20-30 minutes discussing the essay portion of the exam; Specifically, what the readers will likely be looking for and how to find clues in the question about what to emphasize in the essay. We then brainstormed topics for the essay on the practice exam, which I assigned him to complete for homework.

We spent this session reviewing reading comprehension questions that involved discriminating between facts and opinions, arriving at a specific strategy that the student was able to practice independently repeatedly and with success. We worked again on our metacognitive strategies for reading comprehension. In particular we focused on a multilevel summarizing technique in which he would summarize each sentence in just a few words of his own choosing, then summarize paragraphs in a very short sentence or diagram, and finally summarize the entire reading selection with a sentence or two and/or a diagram.

Today the student and I spent our session focusing mainly on the language arts test, which begins tomorrow. She is ready for the test. I encouraged her to try her best on all the practice items we do, so she can get in the habit of trying hard and hopefully doing her best on the actual test as well. I know she can get high scores, since she is very smart and an excellent reader.

During this session, the student took a full English test. She completed the test within the given time limit. I suggest that she uses the extra time to go over as many of her answers as possible. Her scores on the English sections we have been practicing during the sessions have been steadily improving: 27,28,30. For homework, I assigned one full English test, one full Reading test and two essays. I am a little concerned about the essay portion of the ACT. She just needs to practice organizing her ideas and coming up with strong supporting examples. She is scoring very well on the Reading (31-32 range).

Reviewed geometry, ratios, equations and forms of measurement. The student has some trouble relating forms of distance, to certain objects, and applying proportions, but has been proficient with the rest of the material. Left her with practice problems.

If your student could benefit from working with professional ACT Aspire tutors, Varsity Tutors can connect you with a certified instructor who meets all of your scheduling and academic needs. The ACT Aspire is an annual series of standardized tests designed to track a student's academic progress from third grade through early high school (grades 9-10). It allows educators to easily discover where students are improving, which areas could use more work, and how their academic instruction translates into the college and career skills students will need later in life. Unlike many standardized tests, the ACT Aspire is available in both computer and pencil and paper versions, though the computer version is more popular.

Perhaps you're familiar with the ACT, one of the most-trusted college entrance examinations taken by high school juniors and seniors each year. The ACT Aspire is related, and scores are tied to the college admissions test to produce results you can trust. Continue reading to learn more about how private ACT Aspire tutoring sessions can help your student reach for their academic potential.

How can ACT Aspire tutors help the student in my life improve their knowledge of academic subjects?

Working with an ACT Aspire tutor means studying in a private learning environment designed around a student's specific needs. While traditional classroom settings are tied to a set curriculum that they must stick to regardless of an individual student's needs, a private instructor is free to concentrate on your student's unique areas of opportunity. If your third-grader excels in reading for their age, their instructor can quickly move onto another topic to keep study sessions engaging. If they have a harder time with their multiplication tables, their instructor can slow things down and provide additional examples and explanations until your students feels ready to move on. An ideal pace is one where students feel engaged by the speed at which new concepts are introduced but not overwhelmed, and a private instructor can put in the time to discover what that means for your student.

Similarly, ACT Aspire tutoring sessions can be designed with your student's learning style in mind. If the student in your life is a kinesthetic learner, they might play games during their study sessions to add an interactive element to the proceedings. If they are more of a visual learner, visual aids such as counting cubes, anatomical models, graphics, and illustrations can be incorporated into study sessions to make it easier for them to picture key concepts. If your student is an auditory learner, oral repetitions and recordings that may be listened to over and over again may be the best way for them to approach test prep.

Studying in a one-on-one learning environment can also prove advantageous. Private study time gives your student an opportunity to establish a personal rapport with their instructor, potentially making them feel more comfortable asking for help as needed. Questions asked can also be addressed promptly, allowing your student to receive answers before a simple misunderstanding has the opportunity to spiral out of control. Similarly, all of your student's assignments can be reviewed quickly, ensuring that your student can act on any feedback they receive while the material remains fresh in their mind.

Many students also work on their broader study skills during their private tutoring sessions. For example, perhaps your student could more effectively express themselves with the written word. If your student isn't already in the habit of outlining their essay assignments, their instructor can show them how to do so. Not only does working from an outline make it easier for a student to remember all of their supporting details, but it also serves as a road map to follow if they forget what they wanted to say next. When you're composing a timed essay (either on the ACT Aspire or elsewhere), nothing feels worse than hearing the clock tick down without any new words appearing on the screen.

Likewise, many students could retain more of the information they read. If that describes your student, their instructor might show them active reading techniques such as note-taking to promote a closer reading of the text. If you're thinking about taking notes as you go, it's virtually impossible to think about anything besides the material you're working with. Your student can also make a note of anything that doesn't make sense to them so that they remember to ask about it later.

If your student tenses up around numbers, their ACT Aspire tutor can provide practice problems to help them feel more comfortable with grade-appropriate quantitative concepts. Sometimes, all it takes to develop a more comprehensive understanding of a given topic is a little bit of practice.

What can ACT Aspire tutors do to help my student prepare for exam day?

The ACT Aspire is offered to students in a wide age range, and it would be silly to give a student in third grade the same test as one in high school. As such, there is a grade-specific ACT Aspire test for grades 3-8 and Early High School to give students of all ages an appropriate level of academic challenge. The exact formatting can vary by test, but every ACT Aspire consists of the following five sections: Math, English, Reading, Writing, and Science. Every section is also timed, meaning time management is an important skill for test-takers of all ages.

Many students take practice exams under realistic conditions during their ACT Aspire tutoring sessions to better understand what the time available to them feels like. If your student is struggling to finish their exam on time, their instructor may show them time management strategies that they can use on the exam and beyond. For example, students can guess on multiple-choice items. While it's obviously better to know the answer, taking a stab something and moving on to the next item is often preferable to puzzling over a single question for an extended period of time. After all, the next one might be easier.

Unfortunately, not every question on the ACT Aspire is multiple-choice. Short-answer questions require students to explain their reasoning on a given item using no more than x number of words. For example, a student might be asked to explain why a pair of inequalities do not share a solution set or to interpret a reading passage. Long-answer items require students to write a narrative or essay based on the prompt provided. Whenever writing is involved, your student's instructor can encourage them to save enough time at the end to review their work and correct any silly mistakes before they are graded.

The ACT Aspire also uses "technologically-enhanced items," or questions that incorporate technology into the testing process in some way. For example, your student might be asked to rearrange items in a list to make it more logical or sort through data to more effectively interpret it. Practicing with the interface for these items can help mitigate any test anxiety your student may be experiencing. An ACT Aspire tutor can also show your student meditation techniques that they can use if they start to feel overwhelmed on test day.

One of the biggest benefits of practice exams is identifying areas of academic strength as well as any areas that could use further refinement. If your student consistently scores better on the Science section than the Reading one, they now know that future study sessions should concentrate on reading. They may also have more self-confidence on the Science section because they know that they did well with it.
