What topics and skills can be covered during Ann Arbor SSAT prep to help my students prepare for the SSAT?

Ann Arbor SSAT Prep can cover any of the content found on the various sections of the SSAT, which is offered at different levels depending on the grade your student is currently enrolled in. Elementary Level is for third- and fourth-grade students applying for an independent school for the next year. Middle Level is for students in the fifth, sixth, or seventh grade who wish to apply to an independent middle school for the next school year. The Upper Level SSAT is given to students in the eighth through eleventh grade who are seeking to gain entrance to an independent or private high school for the following year. Each level contains 5 sections: Reading, Verbal, Quantitative, Experimental, and Writing. The Experimental and Writing sections are not scored but your Writing sample is sent to any school that receives your SSAT scores. Let's take a brief look at the skills needed for each level of this SAT.

Elementary Level SSAT students will have an hour and 50 minutes to complete their exam. There are 30 Quantitative questions, 30 Verbal questions, and 28 Reading questions. The Writing sample will simply ask your student to write a story which contains a beginning, middle, and end about a provided picture.

Middle Level students will have just under three hours to answer 167 questions. There are 50 questions in the Quantitative section, 40 passage-based questions in the Reading section, and 60 questions in the Verbal section. The Writing sample for this level contains two creative prompts and your student must select one on which to base a story.

Upper Level students will also answer 167 questions in under just three hours. The number of questions in each section is the same as the Middle level but they are more difficult. The Writing sample will provide your student with a creative prompt and a traditional prompt and your student must select one on which to base an essay. This is your student's opportunity to demonstrate persuasive writing techniques.

No matter which level your student is at, Varsity Tutors is here to support the SSAT preparation process.

What are the benefits of different types of Ann Arbor SSAT prep provided by Varsity Tutors?

When you sign up for SSAT prep provided by Varsity Tutors, you gain the opportunity to sign your student up for two exceptional SSAT prep options. You can either sign your student up to take part in an online interactive course or work with a private SSAT mentor. Either of these options can be an exceptional resource when preparing for this important exam but each comes with its own unique set of benefits and advantages. Let's take a closer look at each option.

If your student prefers a structured and social learning environment that mimics a traditional classroom, an online Ann Arbor SSAT prep course may be the right choice. When you enroll your student in an online course, your student has access to interactive class sessions in which he or she can directly interact with the instructor as if they are in the same room. There will also be opportunities to work on group activities and participate in collaborative discussions when working through the various skills necessary to do well on the SSAT. If your student ever has a hard time with a specific concept or particular skill, one-on-one time can be set aside to work with the instructor. This provides your student with the opportunity to ask questions and receive instant feedback on how to work through a specific type of problem. New class sessions begin each week which means your student can begin an SSAT course as soon as he or she is ready. This makes it very convenient to fit structured learning time into an already busy schedule.

If your student prefers to work more independently, you may wish to sign him or her up to work with a private Ann Arbor SSAT tutor. This gives your student access to customized lesson plans which can be based on his or her exact areas of need or improvement. A private teacher can take the time to get to know your student's personal strengths and weaknesses, as well as his or her preferred learning style. With this information in mind, an SSAT mentor can make sure to teach study sessions in a manner which makes the most sense to your student. As your student progresses in their knowledge of the content and skills, study sessions can be adjusted to focus on new areas. Study sessions can be attended using our Live Learning Platform, meaning your student can study in the comfort of your own home, at the local library, or even at your favorite café.

Some parents may choose to sign their students up for both options, which can provide both the opportunity for personalized instruction and collaborative activities. No matter which option you and your student choose, Varsity Tutors can help students in their SSAT preparation.
