Certified Tutor

Originally I'm from Niagara Falls, NY, but I'm currently working as a forensic DNA technologist in Northern Virginia. I graduated from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA with my Bachelor's in Biochemistry and my Master's in Forensic Science and Law. I was drawn to this major because of my interest in science as well as mysteries (especially Nancy Drew as a kid!). In my free time I enjoy hiking, kayaking, playing tennis, working on arts and crafts, and traveling

My love of learning started at a young age, thanks to my parents and a library card that opened my eyes to a wealth of information. It's my goal to help others enjoy learning as much as I have! I first started tutoring in high school, and I've enjoyed helping students from kindergarten age through college work through challenging concepts to gain a better understanding of the material.

I'm a strong believer that "hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard". Not all subjects come easy to everyone, but with the right attitude, anything is possible. I hope that through tutoring I can help students set and reach their academic goals and establish life-long learning habits.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that it is important to learn from mistakes, but not dwell on them. Each day is a fresh start, and yesterday's frustrations shouldn't be the focus. When tutoring, I like to begin the lesson by looking at one's strengths and approaching a problem by using these skills.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I think it's important to make the information being learned relevant to the student. Some topics might not seem to be that useful, but by learning more about the student's interests, I try to relate future lessons back to this information. Also, I think it's important to establish both short-term and long-term goals at the first tutoring session. This ensures that both the student and myself are on the same page, and allows us to track our progress.
