Writing Tutoring review by Jaclyn in Vancouver
I asked the student to find some of her previous essays so we could look over what comments she had gotten and discuss ways to improve. It looks like she'll solve several problems by drawing in more contextual information, especially before she takes a position on the argument. By looking at the economic, social, political, etc. statuses and implications, she'll develop a more complex argument that doesn't rely solely on the documents given. Going into more depth about why certain events are important - pushing beyond simply stating that they happened - will also make a tremendous difference.

We reviewed the student's recent achievements at school and forthcoming assignments. She's been doing well on tests and had just completed an essay for English that we'd discussed in a previous session. Her essay seemed to me intelligent, well-written, and insightful, lacking only quotes to back up her points. We spent a little time looking at the student's Latin homework, then she began on an algebra problem set that she'd been assigned in class. She made good progress and obviously has a talent for spotting the significant patterns and manipulating algebraic expressions. She worked quickly and confidently on the problems and maintained her focus well. We discussed different approaches to studying mathematics and shared experiences of our mathematical educations and what kinds of exercise we each find most motivating. At the very end of the session, we talked a little about the student's upcoming biology test.

The student worked on word-game worksheet as a warm-up, and then we tackled finding the main point of a paragraph on a couple of other worksheets. This related directly into his homework assignment, which we completed.

The student and I had a very productive session, as we prepared and wrote an argumentative essay comparing the American and Israeli declarations of independence. We worked well together and I am looking forward to what she gets for a grade for this assignment. We are scheduled to meet Thursday, 4/11 to prepare for her upcoming AP entrance exams.

Writing Tutoring review by Kiel in Vancouver
The student and I began the session with a briefing of his current progress and goals for his English and writing courses for this last semester. His two goals, to receive an A on his unit summative assessment and to ultimately obtain an A in English on his report card will be discussed an revisited every session. The main aim of the session was to focus on current problems the student is experiencing in writing, mainly sentence fluency, voice, and spelling. Through using a sample book of prose we looked at the way in which a writer established the first two and critiqued him on what he could do better as well as what he did that could be applied to the student's own writing. In addition, the session ended with a mini-lesson on visual spelling, ultimately culminating in the student being able to spell two tough words backwards and forwards using his visual memory. He liked this lesson and decided I could be used with his writing later.
