Varsity Tutors can help students who are thinking about their college admissions exams by setting them up with an appropriate Indianapolis ACT course. While college is still a year or two away for most students preparing to take the ACT, it's never too early to start thinking about the score that you want, especially if you're trying to get into a top school such as Indiana University, Purdue University, or Butler University. Before you start putting your application together, you're probably going to need to take one of two college admissions exams. If you're like many students at North Central High School or Franklin Central High School, you may opt to take the ACT. With the competitive nature of college admissions, it's important to make your application look its best by earning the best ACT score you can.
If you've never taken the ACT before, it will be one of the most comprehensive and thorough tests you'll have taken to this point in your life. The ACT consists of four required sections and one optional section, covering much of the knowledge you're expected to have gained throughout your school years. No matter where you currently are on your preparation for this exam, it's normal if you're concerned about the test and getting yourself ready for it. If you're looking for some extra help to build your confidence, Varsity Tutors can get you started by connecting you with an Indianapolis ACT class or private ACT tutor that fits your schedule and can help you start preparing for this important test.
What can an Indianapolis ACT prep course cover?
The ACT includes four required sections covering English, Math, Reading, and Science, and test takers can complete an optional Writing section as well. The four required sections must be completed in about three hours, and you'll have an additional 40 minutes to respond to the prompt if you choose to take the Writing section. Let's take a more in-depth look at what you're going to see on the test.
On the English section, you'll have 45 minutes to answer 75 questions, and you'll receive a score between 1 and 36 based on your knowledge of English language skills. You'll be facing questions that might focus on reading a passage and comprehending the material, or you might have to edit the passage and point out which errors the author made. You might have to judge the tone of the author's writing, or you might have to decide the meaning of a sentence. Regardless of what questions you're asked, all questions in this section will be multiple choice, and the time limit means that you'll have roughly one minute and 40 seconds per question. Remember, there's no penalty for guessing on the ACT, so if you start running out of time, it's better to make your best guess - or even take a wild guess - than to leave a question blank.
When you face the Math section, you'll have an hour to answer 60 questions, and you'll be tested on mathematical concepts from pre-algebra all the way up to trigonometry. You'll have to show your numerical reasoning skills, your ability to interpret equations, and your understanding of multiple functions, just to name a few concepts. Like the English section, you won't encounter a penalty for guessing, so there's nothing wrong with making your best guess when the numbers aren't adding up correctly.
On the Reading section, you'll get 35 minutes to answer 40 questions. You'll have to read passages and focus your attention on comprehending the piece and explaining the author's point. You'll have to synthesize information quickly and make informed decisions about what you've read. You've got less than a minute per question on this section, and that's not counting the time you'll spend reading each passage. In short, this section depends greatly on your ability to read and understand information in a brief window of time.
The last required section is the Science section. Again, you'll have 40 multiple-choice questions in 35 minutes, and you'll be reading passages of information that will test your reasoning and problem-solving skills in biology, Earth science, chemistry, and physics.
Finally, if you choose to attempt the Writing section, you'll have 40 minutes to respond to a prompt and craft a coherent argument. This section will test your command of the English language as well as your ability to create and support an argument.
How can an Indianapolis ACT class help me succeed on the test?
The work you'll put in during an Indianapolis ACT course can help you review the information you'll need as well as develop a few strategies that can increase your chances of success. When you opt for an ACT class, you won't be on your own unless you want to be. You'll learn in an interactive, collaborative class with other ACT test takers, taught by a qualified instructor who has taken the test before and knows the material and the test's format. New class sections start on a weekly basis, and you'll be able to choose a two-week or four-week class, depending on your needs and what fits your schedule.
During your class, you'll cover each section, discuss information that's likely to come up on the test, and review strategies that can help you prepare. You'll be able to discuss information with classmates, and if you think you need a bit of one-on-one work, that's not a problem. All you have to do is ask your instructor. If there's a content area where you think you can improve, a class can be a great way to start.
