Parlez-vous français? If French is your favorite subject and you want to find a quantitative way to demonstrate your mastery of the language, look no farther than the SAT Subject Test in French. This exam is an hour-long multiple-choice test that solely tests participants’ knowledge of the French language, including vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension, as well as listening skills if you elect to take the SAT Subject Test in French with Listening. The test includes no short answer or essay component; it’s just eighty-five multiple-choice questions that test the following aspects of the French language in the following ratios:

  • Vocabulary in context (30%)
  • Structure (30–40%)
  • Reading comprehension (30–40%)

“Ok,” you may be saying, “but what does a ‘vocabulary in context’ question even look like?” These often take the form of fill-in-the-blank questions that ask you to select a word or phrase that, when inserted into the blank contained in a sentence, creates a sentence that makes logical sense. Structure questions are where the test gets to measure your ability to conjugate French verbs correctly and work with other aspects of French sentence structure. Reading comprehension is basically what you would expect: you read a passage of French prose, and the test’s questions ask you about what you just read. This part of the exam is very much like the Reading sections you’ve likely encountered before on the SAT or ACT, only in French.

Feeling like this test is something you could handle, but trying to remember whether certain nouns are masculine or feminine, or how to conjugate subjunctive verbs?
