Example Question #1 : Geometry

Calculate the volume of a sphere with the following radius:

\displaystyle r=3

Possible Answers:

\displaystyle 24\pi

\displaystyle 8\pi

\displaystyle 33\pi

\displaystyle 36\pi

\displaystyle 16 \pi

Correct answer:

\displaystyle 36\pi

Explanation:

We can calculate the the volume of a sphere using the following formula:

\displaystyle V=\frac{4}{3}\pi r^3

in this formula the variable, \displaystyle r, represents the radius of the sphere.

Substitute in the known radius and calculate the volume.

\displaystyle V=\frac{4}{3}\times \pi \times 3^3

\displaystyle V=\frac{4}{3}\times \pi \times 27

\displaystyle V=\frac{4}{3}\times 27\pi

Simplify.

\displaystyle V=\frac{4}{3}\times \frac{27\pi}{1}

\displaystyle V=\frac{108\pi}{3}

Solve.

\displaystyle V=36\pi
