Varsity Tutors can help you get more out of your GRE study sessions with an Albany GRE prep supplement. The GRE is a standardized test that is typically taken by individuals who are in the process of applying to graduate programs. You may have decided to take the GRE if you're currently a student at the University at Albany. If you're able to earn a solid score on the GRE, then you could get accepted into some of the more competitive GRE programs that you apply to attend.
However, since the GRE is a comprehensive exam, it can also be a difficult one to study for without any guidance. That's where Varsity Tutors comes in. We'd love to help you pick out the best Albany GRE preparation option for your specific academic needs. Consider reaching out to us today if you think that you would benefit from this type of test preparation assistance. Or, you can also keep reading for a closer look at the GRE and what we can do to help you prepare to take it.
What do you need to know before taking the GRE?
The GRE was designed with the purpose of helping graduate schools assess which of their applicants are most suited for success in the graduate school environment. With this goal in mind, the exam has been split into three sections. These sections focus on Analytical Writing, Quantitative Reasoning, and Verbal Reasoning, respectively. Each part of the GRE requires test-takers to demonstrate a different set of academic skills. You can get help building all of these skills when you reach out to Varsity Tutors to find a test preparation supplement.
The Analytical Writing section has a time limit of 60 minutes. The section asks test-takers to complete two tasks. The first task is to analyze an issue and the second task is to analyze an argument. You'll do this through writing than through answering a series of multiple-choice questions. The work that you do will be graded based on factors like the quality of your writing and the strength of your analysis. You'll earn a final score of 0 to 6 points for your work.
Next, you'll also need to complete the GRE's section on Quantitative Reasoning. On this part of the exam, you'll get a chance to demonstrate your math skills. Many of the questions that you're asked all require knowledge of arithmetic, geometry, data analysis, and algebra. You'll also be asked to show your logical reasoning and problem-solving skills while taking the Quantitative Reasoning section. This part of the GRE features two sections that each contain 20 multiple-choice questions. You'll have an hour and ten minutes to finish the section and will earn a score spanning from 130 to 170 points.
Finally, the last section of the GRE focuses on Verbal Reasoning. Here, you'll be asked a series of 40 multiple-choice questions that assess your skill set in reading comprehension and other related categories of knowledge. For example, some questions may ask you to summarize a passage you've just read, while others could ask you to interpret the meaning of a phrase, word, or sentence based on the context that you've read it in.
It is also important to note here that the GRE also includes an Experimental Section. The Experimental Section won't count towards your final score. However, it is usually embedded somewhere within the Verbal Reasoning or Quantitative Reasoning sections. This means that you won't know which part of the GRE is experimental and which parts aren't while you're taking your test. That's why it's important to answer every question on the GRE as if it will count towards your final score.

I graduated from Penn State in May 2016 with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. I tutored for three years helping kids in freshman and sophomore level math, physics, and chemistry courses. I have tutored groups and individuals. I am an extremely friendly person who loves teaching! The best way to teach a student is to have them answer problems on their own. As a tutor, I am there to help students reach the answer, not to be there for the answer. Specifically, I ask students difficult, but practical questions to get them thinking in the right direction. I want my students convinced they can figure problems out on their own because when it's test time... I won't be there!
