If you feel as though you could benefit from taking a Boston MCAT prep course, Varsity Tutors can find you one of the best in the industry. The MCAT, or Medical College Admission Test, is a high-stakes assessment that tests the skills the medical community finds most predictive of success in med school. It is mandated by virtually every medical school in the United States, so you'll have to take it whether you are planning to apply to Harvard Medical School, Boston University School of Medicine, Tufts University School of Medicine, or an institution located outside of the state.
Naturally, you should take your exam prep seriously if you hope to attend a school like these. One way to do that is to enroll in a Boston MCAT class and pursue your academic goals in a structured learning environment. Of course, not all classes are created equally. Keep reading to learn more about why a class provided by Varsity Tutors is the right fit for you.
What subjects are generally discussed in a Boston MCAT course?
The MCAT is a computerized test with four multiple-choice sections. Test-takers receive a score in the 118-132 range of each section of the test. These scores are then added together to produce a final score between 472-528 that is reported as your grade on the overall MCAT. Every school has its own standards, so it is best to research what the schools you plan to apply to generally look for to come up with a target score.
The MCAT is a very long exam, lasting six hours and 15 minutes even if you eliminate all breaks. You can plan to be at the testing center for a total of seven hours and a half. Here is a closer look at each section of the exam:
Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems
This section of the MCAT covers macro-level topics such as tissues, organs, and how they come together as organ systems. You will need a solid understanding of biochemistry, organic chem, inorganic chemistry, and physics in order to answer the questions here. The questions themselves number 59, with 44 items based on 10 reading passages and the remaining 15 standing alone. You have a total of 95 minutes to answer all of the questions on the section.
Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills
This section of the assessment evaluates a test-taker's analytical thinking, reading comprehension, and verbal reasoning skills. Every question is based on a reading passage drawn from either the social sciences or humanities, but you won't need any prior knowledge of those subject areas in order to answer correctly. Instead, test-takers are asked to use context to define words and phrases, make inferences based on what they have read, and evaluate how new information would change a passage's meaning. You have a total of an hour and a half to answer 53 questions here.
Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems
This section of the examination assesses your command of the microbiology behind medicine. You need to visualize how cells collaborate toward macro goals such as reproduction and growth, how cells respond to external stimuli, and the science behind how cells generate and use energy. This section follows the same general structure as the first one, with 59 questions split between passage-based and standalone formats over a testing session lasting 95 minutes.
Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior
The final section on the test concerns itself with topics such as mental health, psychology, sociology, the impact of behavior on health, and the "human" side of medicine. For example, test-takers are expected to have a comprehensive understanding of how social stratification can limit a patient's access to resources and affect their overall well-being. This section follows the same format as sections one and three, consisting of 59 questions over 95 minutes.
What are some of the advantages of taking a Boston MCAT course provided by Varsity Tutors?
Every Boston MCAT class takes place on our exclusive live virtual platform, an online classroom that creates the illusion that you and your classmates are all in the same room even if you're actually miles apart. That's right, you don't have to worry about driving through traffic every week just to attend your class. Our platform supports real-time interactions, making it just as easy to communicate with your instructor and peers as if you really were together. Therefore, you can ask for help simply by raising your hand.
Some students may be leery of sharing their instructor with other students, but doing so is actually a good thing. You can all help each other out, creating a learning environment where everybody works together to further your collective understanding of academic topics. For instance, let's say that you heard a great mnemonic device for all of the organs involved in a particular organ system. If you share it with your peers, one of them may later return the favor by sharing a great test-taking tip they know. You may even try explaining concepts to one another to reinforce your understanding of the material. If you ever feel like you need to study on your own, you can book private study time with your instructor outside of your normal class sessions to go over anything you're having a hard time with.
We also try to make attending a Boston MCAT class as convenient as possible. Studying with other people allows all of you to split the cost, making expert test prep more accessible than you may realize. We also provide two and four-week options to make it easier to find a class that fits into your busy schedule. Most importantly, new classes start up every week, ensuring that there is always a fresh class to join when you're ready to do so.
