If you are a parent seeking preparation assistance for your student with the ISEE, you should contact Varsity Tutors for help to enroll your student into a Buffalo ISEE prep course. The ISEE is given to students who seek admission to a private or independent school. The ISEE has four versions, depending on the student's grade level: Primary Level, Lower Level, Middle Level, and Upper Level. The sections, timing, and the number of questions for every version of the test, except for Primary Levels, are the same. The five sections on the ISEE: Verbal Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Math Achievement, Quantitative Reasoning, and Essay are formatted for your student's grade level. Primary-Level students only have three main sections to complete: Reading, Math, and Writing.
What is included in a Buffalo ISEE course?
A Buffalo ISEE course offers a thorough review of ISEE testing materials. The Upper-Level ISEE version is available for students who will enter high school, ninth grade or above. Starting with Verbal Reasoning, students should complete forty questions within twenty minutes. Your student's comprehension of English, including synonym and sentence completion questions, is the central concept in the Verbal Reasoning section. Several of the topics and ideas to review for successful completion of the Verbal Reasoning portion of the ISEE include the identification of parts of speech, roots of words, vocabulary, knowledge of suffixes from Greek or Latin, and prefixes. The next section of the ISEE is titled Quantitative Reasoning. Your student has to answer thirty-seven questions within the thirty-five-minute time frame. This section's central focus concentrates on mathematical thinking; skills such as solving equations, working with exponents, mean, mode, and medium are all incorporated in the testing material in Quantitative Reasoning. The third section, Reading Comprehension, requires students to show complete knowledge of how to evaluate indirect information that is not explicitly stated, how to compare and contrast information, and literary genres. Your student must complete thirty-six questions within the 35 minutes set time allotment. Math Achievement is the fourth section of the ISEE. The primary purpose of Math Achievement is to evaluate your student's skills in math operation. Some of the topics and concepts within this section are finding the area of quadrilaterals and triangles, the use of coordinate grids, and solving word problems. Students are expected to complete this section in forty minutes and reply to forty-seven questions. The last part is the Essay section where students must show their writing skills to prospective schools. Your student will have thirty minutes to respond to a given prompt in which they must submit a written story or essay that shows potential schools their abilities to use grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, correct spelling and relevant details that add interest to their piece.
The Middle-Level is for students who are preparing to enter the seventh or eighth-grade. Though the testing section titles, number of questions, and time allotments are the same, the ISEE content on the Middle Level of the ISEE is based on the educational level of your student. First, the Reading Comprehension section will include material that references the use of suffixes, word clues, parts of speech and the use of prefixes, root words, suffixes, and vocabulary that is appropriate for the educational level. Middle-Level test-takers also have a Quantitative Reasoning section where the central purpose is to measure the understanding of fractions, percents, integers, and fractions. Additional skills that are included in the Quantitative Reasoning section require students to use formulas to calculate square roots and measurements. Once your student begins to the Math Achievement section, they will need to demonstrate their knowledge of how to use a Venn Diagram, properties of operations, prime factors, multiples, and integer comparison. As in the Upper Level, a written response from a prompt is required for the Essay section of the ISEE. The student must use practical writing skills that are taught at their educational level and impress schools by revealing more about themselves and their personality.
The Lower-Level version of the ISEE is for students entering the fifth or sixth grade the following year. Lower-Level students have a section that measures their Reading Comprehension; however, the content for this section encompasses students' abilities to identify central ideas and to extract relevant information from written passages. The second section is Quantitative Reasoning which displays your student's proficiency at their educational level of quantitative math skills. Skills such as division, probability, identification of geometric objects, and multiplication are topics and concepts that are often used for reference within the material of the Quantitative Reasoning section. Verbal Reasoning is the title of the third section and asks your student to use context clues to finish sentences with vocabulary taught in elementary and middle school, and that is on word lists. Next is the Math Assessment section that measures student's knowledge of math-related skills and concepts. Topics that your student will encounter are decimals, simple operations, estimation, and symmetry. The Essay section of the Middle-Level Essay section is similar to the Middle and Upper-Level versions. Students are to read a prompt then compose a written reply which should reflect their writing abilities, thought organization, and grammar skills.
The last level is the Primary Level which is broken down into three sub-levels for elementary school-aged students. Those who are entering second grade are in the Primary 2 category, those who are entering the third-grade are Primary 3, and fourth graders are Primary 4. For all three Primary Levels, the Reading and Math section of the exam is in multiple-choice format. Referring to the Reading section, the questions are to evaluate test-takers' reading comprehension skills and grade-appropriate vocabulary. The math section for the Primary Level versions of the ISEE measures your student's elementary mathematical skills, depending on their grade level. The final part of the ISEE is Writing. Students will have to compose an original writing sample, given to them from a picture prompt. They will have the opportunity to show prospective schools their personality, creativity, and writing skills. The additional section titled Auditory Comprehension is only required for Primary 2 students to complete. Your student will listen to an audio prompt and must complete six questions within the seven-minute time allotment. The items within the Auditory Comprehension section derive from the audio passages that your student will hear.
