The student and I got started on prep for her AP English class. She has a test coming up on The Scarlet Letter and she'd made a study guide, so we reviewed it and identified major themes and symbols. She got pretty excited about the multiple layers in the novel and feels like she has a pretty good grasp of the big ideas going into the test. We then went through some homework due Thursday, which required a close reading of a 19th-century rhetorical passage and identifying the main argument, supporting statements, rhetorical devices, etc. She had a hard time understanding the essay on the first pass, but we broke it down line by line and she was able to summarize and identify the main arguments. They'll be working on it in class tomorrow as well so I think she'll feel like she's on pretty steady ground.

Tonight, we worked on a memoir assigned for class. We brainstormed topics for the paper, chose a particular experience to write about, and began writing. We also discussed the writing process in general in relation to short stories and memoirs. We scheduled a time to meet next week and agreed to work on whatever is assigned at that time.

I brought a sample of the AP test for her to review as well as a 'cheat sheet' of study tips for her to look over as well.
