Matt

Certified Tutor

In 2014 I graduated from Johns Hopkins University as a Public Health major with a concentration in Immunology and Infectious Diseases. I then went on to complete a Masters program at Georgetown University in human physiology. Given the amount of schooling I have gone through myself, I have taken a wide range of subjects and more standardized tests than I would like to admit. I have taught students of almost every age in various fields such as elementary science, Hebrew, chemistry, MCAT prep, and many more.. My ultimate plan is to go to medical school, but in the meantime I try to teach as much as possible!

What is your teaching philosophy?

I know firsthand what it is like to be bogged down by material from way too many classes at once. And it can become even more difficult to focus when you throw a standardized test like the SAT or the MCAT into the mix. Because I have been through it, I bring to my students the unique perspective of a recently stressed out student myself, who can communicate with them on a personal level. I work to understand what is the most difficult, the most motivating, and the most rewarding for my students.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

During the first session with a new student, I think it is important to take a moment to get to know each other on a personal level. From this, I can gather exactly what it is that a student is struggling with and what they think the cause of the confusion might be. Once I've gotten to know my student a little better, teaching them any subject from that point on will be significantly easier to do.
