As you go through the process of applying to MBA programs, one of the biggest boosts to your credentials that you can have is a high score on the GMAT, or Graduate Management Admission Test. This score is one of the crucial factors used by college admissions offices as they make difficult decisions regarding who to accept into their programs. Succeeding on the GMAT is no easy task. If you are trying to get into local business schools, such as the Wisconsin School of Business at the University of Wisconsin Madison, taking the exam will be one of the biggest steps in your application process. If you think it would be beneficial to receive some academic guidance as you take part in this process, participating in a Madison GMAT prep course through Varsity Tutors could be just what you need to reach for your goals. If you prefer more personalized instruction, it might make sense to sign up to work with a Madison GMAT tutor. What types of subject areas does Madison GMAT prep cover?
The GMAT is made up of four separate sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Integrated Reasoning, and an Analytical Writing Assessment. You have three and a half hours to complete the entire exam, and each section consists of a variety of different question types. There are three configurations to the order of sections that you are allowed to choose from.
The Analytical Writing Assessment is the most different from the other sections. You will be given 30 minutes to complete a single essay that is scored on a scale from 0 to 6. You are provided with a written argument that you must read, evaluate, and provide a proper response to that displays your command of the English language and ability to express ideas.
Verbal Reasoning asks you to complete 36 multiple-choice questions over 65 minutes. You are given reading passages and tested on subjects such as comprehension and sentence correction. The Quantitative Reasoning section consists of 31 multiple-choice questions, and you are given 62 minutes to complete it. You are tested on your problem-solving skills and the ability to determine if a problem provides you with enough data to reach a proper conclusion. Each of these two sections receives a score from 0 to 60.
The focus of the Integrated Reasoning section is how well you can analyze and combine data from multiple sources. You are given 12 questions that consist of a variety of tables, graphics, and text and must answer questions regarding the data within them. You have 30 minutes to finish this section, which is scored from 1 to 8.
What are the different styles of Madison GMAT prep that are offered, and what are the benefits of each?
The two main approaches that you are given the opportunity to sign up for are private tutoring and prep classes. Each of these options has distinct benefits, and you are welcome to take part in both if you would like to combine the strengths of each.
When you participate in a Madison GMAT prep class, you will receive instruction that is, in many ways, similar to the classroom environments you have likely been part of for the majority of your academic life. The largest difference is that your sessions will take place entirely online. New sessions of these classes are available every week, and you have the choice to sign up for two-week or four-week sessions. While there is a designed structure to the class, you are able to access your virtual classroom wherever you find a convenient spot and a reliable internet connection.
When taking part in the sessions that make up your GMAT course, a group of similarly minded students and your instructor will conduct group discussion and activities that can provide you with a variety of perspectives on the relevant material. Everyone in the course can put their minds together and come up with the best strategies to approach both preparation and the exam itself. When a particular area or concept doesn't make total sense to you, it can often be helpful to hear how someone else in the same situation approaches and understands it. These prep courses also provide you with the opportunity to have some one-on-one time with your instructor.
If you are the type of student who strongly prefers learning in a one-on-one environment, private tutoring might be the better option for you. Maybe the greatest benefit to this type of preparation is the ability to get instruction that is customized to your personal strengths and weaknesses. You have the option to schedule meetings with your instructor at an in-person location that is convenient for you, or you can use our online Live Learning Platform to conduct your sessions together. No matter when and where your sessions take place, a private instructor can first work to understand how you learn best and your specific needs before tailoring their lesson plan to maximize effectiveness and efficiency. In classroom learning, all students often have to work at the same pace and receive the exact same style of teaching, but everyone learns in their own unique way. Private tutors can make sure to focus on the areas where you need the most improvement and not waste time on material you have already mastered. They can also listen to your personal concerns and provide immediate feedback regarding the progress that you are making.

...struggling in math and science, as these subjects can be difficult to understand. I employ a variety of strategies including mnemonic devices, physical manipulatives, and drawings/diagrams to accommodate different learning styles. Typically, I have the students attempt to solve a problem and then ask leading questions whenever he/she gets stuck. If the questions are more conceptual in nature, I start with what the student knows and build upon that knowledge. I am passionate about math...

I find joy in helping students meet their educational needs and helping them succeed wherever their learning takes them. As Albert Einstein indicated, "Education is not the learning of facts but the training of the mind to think." To think about your thinking is the key to education and represents my goal as a tutor. You see, critical-thinking is the pathway to engaged learning.

I connect with people best through sharing ideas. The majority of my spare time is spent trying to simplify or find alternate proofs of basic theorems to make them more intuitive.... Focusing on beauty solves many problems a teacher faces. If I am attending a lecture about The Great Gatsby, I will be eager if the speaker tells of the beauty she sees, rather than a quick and dirty type of analysis. I regularly talk to people who admit math wasn't their favorite subject in school. Some were self-conscious. Some had gaps they never filled. Some just didn't care. Whatever the case, I admit to them that math is my favorite art form with as much room for expression as sculpting or jazz. I claim that mathematicians are half artists, half observers of fine art. My conversants often tell me it is an epiphany for them to think of math as such, and that it helps heal their math wound. A marvelous way I have found to unveil beauty in the classroom is by using surprise. I like to present ideas from a simple perspective, discuss them briefly, then release a theorem. Thales' theorem (the diameter of a circle subtends a right angle to any point on the circumference) is a great example, especially with the aid of Java applets. After playing a bit with triangles by moving points around in a worksheet, it's surprising to be able to connect two structures as basic as a right triangle and a diameter. Next in importance to marveling at beauty, I want students to learn to think critically to solve problems. Understandably, some students have never had guidance past high school drills. All the more, problem solving should be emphasized and revisited throughout college curriculum. I have many years of experience in problem solving competitions and a collection of principles regarding problem solving that I like to follow. One is about inverse problems. Consider the following: if baseball cards are five cents apiece and shipping costs fifty cents, how many cards will one dollar buy? After making the arithmetic clear, students had better know how to calculate the forward problem, i.e. "How much will x number of cards cost?" I'm depending on them knowing the forward problem because we covered it last week, but it is important to bring it out in more than just a mention so the students have a comfortable base to start. It's like revisiting rational numbers before diving into irrationals. They are intrinsically tied, and it gives the class confidence to start with old material.

As an educator for 20 years in both the US and Canada, I enjoying working with students of all ages. With a background in Special Education and tutoring for test prep (GED, ACT, SAT), I have a heart for those who find it difficult to succeed in the classroom. It is my passion to encourage students and help them learn strategies to succeed in their education and in life. ... All students have the ability to learn, so the challenge, as a teacher or tutor, is to understand how the student learns best. Utilizing that learning style, I desire to encourage the student and provide opportunities for the student to succeed. Beyond the current learning style, I believe it is important to equip the student with skills to learn in any classroom environment which they may encounter. Critical thinking skills are equally important to prepare the student for both classroom success and life.
