Tutoring review by Steven in East Hills, NY
The subjects covered were solving a system of inequalities using elimination in word problems and calculating the volume or surface area of three dimensional shapes. The student understands the material and can work through the problems well. The only issue is missing a step due to not rewriting the problem over at each step but this has improved.

The student has an exam tomorrow on trigonometry. The main topics covered were law of sines and cosines. She has shown growth from when we started up to this point. I am impressed with her comprehension and her attitude towards the material. With enough guidance she has been able to perform well and has the confidence to take on any problem.

Review for the final! We did a few trig problems involving finding theta values for a certain output of specific functions, graphing sine using transformations, and solving triangles with the law of sines and law of cosines. We graphed and found the rectangular equation for a parametric equation. The student also had to confront the similarity between hyperbolas and ellipses again, as we had to graph one and find its equation given the foci and a vertex. We reviewed how to use long division to find the non-vertical asymptotes. She can do all these things well. We'll finish this review tomorrow.

We went over what the student has done so far in the course and tried to come up with a rough game plan so that she can get as much done before school starts. With the short time frame available, finishing the entire course before school starts may not be realistic, but we will adjust our expectations as we continue.

Tutoring review by James in East Hills, NY
Today was a good first session. I got to know a little about the student, and we talked about what subjects she takes in school and what type of material and skills they cover. Since she is coming from a Spanish speaking high school, we began talking over some concepts in English so that she would be comfortable working with them on the SAT. Since she has never taken an SAT or any standardized test, we began with an in depth overview of the SAT and how it works, including a little bit about scoring. We went over the format and the different sections, as well as question type and difficulty. We began by looking at a few math problems to get her into the swing of things. We talked about how it's necessary, particularly in the math, to take the problem one step at a time and to write everything down. We reviewed terms such as median, mean, and mode, and also the different operations and how they relate to each other. We then moved onto a writing section and started looking at English grammar that will be tested. We set up a schedule to meet everyday this upcoming week.
