Tutoring review by Kaitlin in Lynbrook, NY
Today, the student and I made corrections on her math test. The test covered the topics of mean, median, and mode. She did not seem to struggle with the concepts. The questions she missed were because she didn't read the question correctly. I suggested to the student that she leave 5-10 minutes at the end of her next test to reread each question and double check her answers are correct and complete. I also think that the student needs to make her handwriting more legible. She was making minor errors in her work because she misread her own handwriting. In addition to her test, the student and I reviewed how to construct a frequency table and a histogram. She seemed to understand the material without any problems. She just needs to double check her work to make sure she didn't make a simple error (e.g., missing a data point).

The student was on top of his material, so I just previewed what his teacher would be doing in the coming week, as per her online video. He too was on top of his material, scoring a 92 in a recent test. I went through things to expect in the upcoming week and helped him through any difficulty he had. Starting next week, we will be jumping ahead of their schedule.

The student got a 63 on her last test, so her aunt and I had talked during the week about what else we could do. We really want to work on the student's confidence so she doesn't get discouraged by her grades; she clearly knows the material, and the tests and quizzes just aren't reflecting that. She and I focused on 2 key points: writing bigger and double-checking her work. She tends to write very tiny, but then it can be hard to see the numbers. Right now she's adding numbers with multiple decimal places. We did each problem on the whiteboard. Then she did it again on her math packet, and if there was a discrepancy in the numbers, she did it a third time. This allowed her to find all of her mistakes. She definitely knows the material. We are really focusing on different study/ practice/ test-taking skills.

We studied synthetic division problems and factoring for the student's quiz tomorrow. After that, we went over solving a system of polynomials and finding the intersections of two functions for her test that's coming up later.

The student and I reviewed math and science on the ACT (completing most of a full section in each case). I believe most of her weakness is psychological -- if she can overcome her anxiety, I believe she is capable of a truly elite score. We will also devote some time to science time management.

Tutoring review by Jacqueline in Lynbrook, NY
We finished reviewing for the student's test by completing her review packet. Most of these questions were review and some of the questions were repeated. At this point, she was fairly familiar with the material, but would still have some memorizing to do to help her with the test.
