We spent time preparing the student for her upcoming algebra exam. We worked through list problems where she had to find the number of possibilities in each "slot" of the list. We also worked with tree diagrams a little. She is very good at doing binomial expansion. I showed her the relationship between the two and how she can obtain the Pascal's triangle using combinations. We also practiced finding a specific term within a binomial expansion using combinations. We practiced some worksheets to make sure she understands how to do the problems as well as comprehension of the concepts. She did great today!

Tutoring review by Abigail in Manchester, MI
Today the student and I worked on applying ratios (and percents) to word problems. She had a few issues with checking her work and calculations, so I gave her some longer problems where she needed to write out all the steps and really work through it. She definitely has the ratio process down now, so we will move on to other skills.

Tutoring review by Rachel in Manchester, MI
During this session, we worked on building the student's confidence with single variable equations, pulling relevant information out of word problems, absolute value equations, and general inequality equations. She was very open to the material and did not get discouraged when the problems were difficult. I tried to emphasize just focusing on one step at a time rather than looking at the whole problem and getting discouraged. I believe that she has a better understanding and an increased confidence in her abilities after this session.

Tutoring review by Lourdes in Manchester, MI
The student spent the first half of the session going through a practice problem and writing out steps for division problems. I asked her to write them out "like a recipe," and then apply the steps to a new problem. This really helped her remember the steps, and by the end of the session, she was able to explain how to do long division. She also benefited from two short, 2-minute instructional YouTube videos on long division, where she could get a visual sense of the math and step-by-step instructions. As we watched a couple of practice problems, we hit pause so she could anticipate what the next step was in the video. She learns very well from correcting her mistakes and approaching the concept from multiple directions.
