Tutoring review by Max in Peekskill, NY
Feeling confident about the work with ratios her class had struggled through in the previous week, the student thought herself to continue onto working with ratios as they relate to similar triangles. Together, we went over various postulates and theorems for proving triangles similar (SSS, AA, etc.), following each with some problems from her textbook to give her some practice with applying these theorems on her own. Working through the theorems step by step seemed to help her focus on solving complex figures in the same way, which was nice. Towards the end, she did have some difficulty determining which pairs of sides in similar triangles were corresponding, so I left her with some strategies about how to rotate and flip figures until you have them at a workable angle.

The student has a test this week covering all the material so far, so we reviewed some and studied a new section on parabolas that will also be on the test. He got an A on his last quiz and has little difficulty with the material after getting a bit of practice.

Today we covered developing personal narratives, using graphic organizers, and the introduction to a five-paragraph essay. I taught the student to speak into a recorder for writing (speak first, organize after), and to not stop when writing, keeping a constant flow--even if the ideas don't connect perfectly (that will come in time).

Tutoring review by Eva in Peekskill, NY
We approached writing a paper that the student had due for her psychology class. She was instructed to write a persuasive paper that pulled in various quotes, case studies, and theories from different psychologists. Her premise was that dissociation is a coping mechanism, not a flaw, and that it's been beneficial to human evolution and survival as a species. Her attitude was good. I'm hoping she got enough from our session to understand what she needs to focus on, what to include and exclude, and how to approach building arguments and synthesizing points of view. I left her with several pages of notes from our talk, having written down a lot of her summarization of what she was trying to say, where it was aligned with the premise. Hopefully this will jump start her efforts to complete this. It was a pleasure to work with her, and I hope to do so again in the future!
