Tutoring review by Adam in Union Beach, NJ
We reviewed addition and subtraction of 2 digit numbers and the introduction to word problems involving numbers. We are using blocks to visualize groups of 10 (10's place) vs individual blocks (1's place). The student was required to recreate her stories or numbers problems in blocks occasionally as part of the homework assignment.

The student and I had another great dual chemistry/algebra session. In Chemistry we went over predicting the products of various reactions - we went over various classifications (acid, base, binary compound, salt, oxides, etc.) and also some techniques for how to predict them, including the good-old-fashioned "Look up the reaction!" trick to build fluency and vocabulary. Then we spent a lot of time working on synthetic division and power functions, where the student really shines, barring the occasional dropping of a minus sign. I briefly quizzed her on things like domains and ranges, and how to work with multiplicities, and she seemed to be doing very well. As usual she does a great job of identifying her own mistakes and learning from them.

Today was our first session and we focused on a few baseline assessments to determine the student's areas of strength and challenges. We worked on letter recognition, letter formation and spacing and reading and phonics. He was very responsive to all the activities presented to him and did a great job focusing throughout the session. We worked on strategies to help him with his letter formation and spacing as well as word decoding and phonics skills. I spoke with his mother regarding some strategies she can work on with him during the week in regards to writing and we discussed some materials for our next session to help the student with reading and writing.

Today, we did problems which contained mainly review concepts for his exam this Saturday. We focused on mostly conversions which was a struggle but after explaining the concepts, he gets the idea. We also named multiple compounds that included transition metals and how to identify acids and bases.

We continued to work on the math section of the SAT book. The concepts we covered include: arithmetic and geometric sequences, remainders of polynomial functions, squares and square roots, absolute value inequalities, quadratic functions, factoring, area and circumference of shapes, distance formula, ratios, rates, word problems involving variables, remainders, combinations, solving systems of equations, equations defined by symbols, special right triangles, combined averages, percentages, and a shape inscribed within another shape. The student did well in nearly all sections. He is a strong math student. One area that we may need more practice with is equations defined by symbols.
