WPPSI Tutoring FAQ
Establishing the appropriate academic path for your young child can have huge implications regarding both the level of their academic performance and with their educational environment. The Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI) is used to help identify students who possess exceptional cognitive capabilities, subsequently granting them access to more advanced, engaging material through a talented and gifted (TAG) academic program. The WPPSI is specifically designed for young children ranging in age from two years and six months to seven years and three months. As such, the evaluation often constitutes the first experience these children have with a structured testing environment, sometimes resulting in anxiety and confusion during the assessment. If you are hoping for your child to qualify for the gifted educational programs at their grade level, it is important that he or she become familiar and comfortable with the testing environment and format well before the day of the evaluation. A private tutor can provide your child with just such exposure, helping them to become engaged with the problem types presented on the WPPSI.
Varsity Tutors can help you connect with WPPSI tutoring options that allow your child to approach the exam with confidence, rather than the trepidation inherent in facing a foreign testing environment. Private WPPSI tutors can accommodate your schedule and meet with your child in person for one-on-one tutoring sessions wherever and whenever is most convenient for your family. Tutors are also available for face-to-face online sessions. The WPPSI presents evaluators with a comprehensive IQ score, as well as subscores in four critical areas: Verbal IQ, Performance IQ, Processing Speed, and Global Language. WPPSI tutoring can help identify the areas in which your child seems to struggle, and can help to elucidate any confusing directives or unintuitive tasks that your child may face. By preemptively exposing your child to the rigors of the tasks and skills tested on the evaluation, you can get a better grasp of their capabilities and intuitions, and can work to develop any areas that may seem to be holding them back.
A high IQ is essential for placement into a gifted program, but a particularly low score in any one subsection could raise concerns for evaluators. WPPSI tutoring can help to ameliorate any noticeable discrepancies in your child's score report. By working one-on-one with a qualified tutor, your child can receive the full and dedicated attention of an instructor who not only is familiar with the tasks and goals of the WPPSI exam, but is also a skilled communicator. Many of the instructors have extensive experience working with young children, and can effectively present new ideas and concepts without causing confusion or frustration. By providing your child with the opportunity to ask questions in a safe, open learning environment, they will be able to bridge the gaps in their understanding before they take the exam. The tutor will develop a customized approach based on your child's individual learning style. They will use the learning strategies and resources that prove most effective for your child during their time together. This individualized method of teaching ensures that your child is receiving the best, most effective preparation for the WPPSI.
WPPSI tutoring is oriented toward helping your child perform to their highest potential on test day. An accurate evaluation of their skills can lead to an academic placement that keeps your child challenged and engaged with academia, leading to an overall more positive educational experience and greater investment in extended higher-level studies. Recent WPPSI Tutoring Session Notes
The student was doing very well on his assigned exam reading test until he ran out of time and had to guess most of the last passage, lowering his score back to where it had been previously. To improve both his pacing and his math skills today, I helped him through more exam math practice. He is finally starting to motivate himself on difficult problems, but we still have a lot of work left to do.
We went over the English sections I had her do for homework, and talked about comma placement - that seems to be a particular stumbling block for her. We finally got to the math section, and worked through some early problems together. At the end, we went through two science passages together, and I explained the main purpose of the science testing.
In our second session, we continued to focus on the verbal reasoning section of the exam, this time looking at how to analyze passage-based reading comprehension questions. We focused on what to underline in passages, and how to bookmark different areas to come back to later. Once finished highlighting the passage, the highlighted words should read like a summary. We also looked at some different question types, and how to eliminate answer choices and pick the best answer by comparison.
The student and I did a complete English section, focusing on the parts that continue to challenge him - mostly related to structure and occasional problems with commas or noun/verb agreement. He is he seems to be catching on to a lot more to the common rules. We also did a couple of reading section practices. He does very well on the reading - on a good pace and seems to understand themes well. We also did some more math practice, focusing on logarithms and geometry.
The student and I corrected and reviewed skipped/incorrect questions from the assigned homework (test #1). We also reviewed math concepts and skills and spent the last hour practicing math problems. I assigned the remaining five sections from test #1 as homework for her to complete in a timed test environment.
The student and I went over her missed questions from last week's sample science exam and talked about ways to avoid her mistakes. Then we did a few sample passages together trying out a few different strategies for approaching each different type of passage. She completed another sample science exam and, after evaluating her mistakes and her successes, we changed gears and began reviewing for strengthening her English skills.
