Tutoring review by Brett in Elmwood Park, NJ
Today the student and I worked on his reading, math and spelling homework. We began with reading, which involved answering questions pertaining to the last two chapters he had read. Reading comprehension is something I've noticed he tends to struggle with. If a question about the reading has a specific word or phrase in it that he can find in the text, he has no problem answering questions. But if the question is a bit more subtle and he has to use the context of the story to answer a question, he has a much more difficult time. I asked him if he has a hard time remembering what happened in the story after he's read it and he said he does sometimes, but it helps if he reads often and doesn't take long breaks in between reading sessions. Repetition seems to help, so we read the two chapters again, taking breaks along the way to identify key plot points and interesting developments as they happened. I think this helped him and he seemed to have an easier time answering questions after going through the story while also talking about the characters' motivations for doing what they did. This is something I think we'll try to work on more in subsequent meetings. We then turned to his math homework, which involved addition and subtraction of mixed numbers. He did a tremendous job with this. He had one question about renaming mixed numbers in a very specific context, but we talked through it, did a few examples, and he was on his way. I've noticed a dramatic improvement in his math work. Just a couple of weeks ago he was struggling with fractions and mixed numbers--specifically with how to move back and forth between an improper fraction and a mixed number. Today, though, he had no problem and breezed through his work. Finally, we ended with spelling. He had a little more difficulty with these words than he has in previous weeks, but they're also harder words. His words for this week all use the suffixes -ist, -or, -er, and -ian. He is usually very good at spelling, and I think he enjoys spelling more than his other areas of study. In this instance, I think just practicing more so he can become more familiar with the words will put him in a great position to do well on this week's spelling test.

Today we mostly reviewed integrals of inverse trig functions. She could use more practice recognizing the substitutions to make, but these integrals are one of the most difficult topics in Calculus. We also discussed the area between curves which she did well on.

My first session focused on gaining an understanding of the subjects and concepts that the student can expect to see. We briefly discussed this and then reviewed a number of concepts related to sequences and series problems.

Today we covered polynomials, word problems, and the rest of Algebra II. The student practiced all the assigned problems as requested with little struggle. One suggestion I would have for her is to write out each step of the problem line by line. This makes it easier to check your work, or find where you made mistakes. We are making great progress with Algebra I and II and will cover the rest of Algebra III in the next two sessions.

Last week, the student and I reviewed his math homework together. We were actually able to get a bit ahead, so we did some work that was due later in the week. He is still (correctly) doing a lot of the math in his head, which is great! However, I keep stressing that he should do it on paper for tests, to make sure he gets his signs right and catches little mistakes. I think we may start writing out half of the problems we do, so he can practice mental math while being sure he is careful.

Tutoring review by Nisarg in Elmwood Park, NJ
Today, we covered transforming f(x), setting up algebraic equations, finding f(x), factoring, solution sets for inequalities, solution for system of equations, trigonometry, cylinder surface area and volume, and equilateral triangles. The student was struggling most with finding f(x), but she got the hang of it afterwards. I left her with a Pass 1, Pass 2 strategy for the actual ACT to get the max amount of points, and then double-check her answers. I left her with extra practice for factoring equation, just so that her speed on certain questions can be improved. Her attitude was very dedicated, and she made this session a joy to teach.
