Tutoring review by Brett in Lodi, NJ
The student is currently in the midst of a week-long standardized test. We began our session by working on his math. He's still working on fractions, and he was recently introduced to the associative and commutative properties. His homework consisted of using these properties to help him in adding several mixed numbers, and he had no problem at all completing his work. I think the student seems confident with the math that he's currently working on. The rest of our time was spent studying for some memorization quizzes that he has coming up. The first thing we did was work on memorizing a few prepositions. Finally, we spent a good chunk of time working on memorizing state capitals. I advised him to at the very least take a look at his map each day and try to give the capitals a once-through, just to keep the material fresh in his brain. I think today's session was very productive.

We covered lessons 1.1 to 1.3 in Thinking with Mathematical Models, which is about linear relationships. We covered linear and nonlinear relationships as well as the difference between positive and negative relationships. I think the student is working on confidence to get the answer and then staying calm if he gets the answer wrong. He was eager to learn. We also covered some of the anticipated homework problems. I think this was a great session and a good start for our tutoring relationship.

At today's session, I checked the student's skills with a variety of practice problems throughout the chapter he's working on. He knows what he's doing, and is good at doing problems in his head. Going forward, I'm going to work on having him write out all steps to the problems. I'm also going to encourage him to take notes in class and use his planner for upcoming assignments and tests.

Tutoring review by Elizabeth in Lodi, NJ
I tutored the student today for the SSAT. We worked on Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary. She completed two timed practice tests. I explained the importance of making sure her answers are on the correct number especially if she skips a question. I also explained the points taken off for wrong answers versus a blank. We scored the tests so that we can see growth. She also completed some math problems which we will continue at the next session. She was very receptive to any help I could give her and had a positive attitude. She was focused and able to complete the sections in the allotted time. I assigned a reading comprehension exercise to complete for our next meeting on Thursday. I also told her to write the vocabulary words she missed with the definition. She will keep a log of these words. She was focused and a pleasure to help with her studies.

For this session, the student completed the ISEE practice test including the essay and final math section. She had some difficulty with the math section and ran out of time and missed many questions. We reviewed the answers to some she missed in the verbal section and reading comprehension, but spent the most time reviewing the math problems she missed. We also went over ways to estimate and speed up her math skill while staying accurate. I also reviewed with her some things to do the day before and general tips. I had previously given her handouts with strategies and math formulas to memorize, and also recommend she work on vocabulary flashcards.
